Default 12" mtx thunder 9500 vs. jl w7

i have been comparing these subs latley and i only want one for the rear of my xb and i think ive decided on the mtx but the w7 still keeps calling back and before i buy i was wondering wich one you would go with, the 9500 with a mtx 1500/1 amp or the w7 with a jl 1000/1 amp both with a custom enclosure. please help.

You can't go wrong with either sub, the w7 has a cleaner sound, where the 9500 might be able to get louder... they both take a huge box and lots of power however...

I have no opinions on either, but here's a write up.

Go on MTX website and watch the video when they test the 2.

They took the 9500 and the JLw7 and hooked them up to straight voltage and kept rasing it.

w7 died after like 30 min at 140 volts and the 9500 was going for 40 min at 148volts and still didnt blow.

They should have it up there on the site.

if you listen to only rap or test tones get the MTX
if you listen to actual music get the JL

i listen to both, i am running a JL12W7 off a JL 1000/1 and it drops nuts

I would have to vote for the W7 also. I have been in the car audio scene for 17 years and have owned everything from the original Pyle subs to Juggernauts. I honestly have never been more impressed with a single woofer than the 10w7 in my Xb on a JL 500/1 amp in a 1 cubic foot box. It plays everything and plays it all well. I have never been a JL fan until now, but this W7 is one awesome woofer.

Comparison charts are worthless. Every application is different and the only real test is listening. When I was competing there were many companies (including MTX) who supposedly had "bigger and better" woofers. Well, I stuck with what was reliable for me and while others were re-coning woofers on site I was just hanging out and waiting for the next round. Power handling means nothing in daily listening. I used to run 7200 watts to each 15" woofer in my Db Drag car, but I would not want to listen to a Juggernaut on a daily basis. They are just not a "musical" woofer. These are both quality woofers and I am sure whichever you choose, you will be happy. These woofer debates can go on forever and ever.

I got to say.

I find this stuff rediculous.

The w7 imo has a superior motor design, a superior suspension design and quite honestly the entire package IS more competetant.

Plugging a driver in just to send it juice to sell more... I mean common.... That's not marketing thats un-educating people and just selling people on the shere ignorance that more power has to be better.

Power doesn't work like that. It's dynamic. When your listening to music, you don't hog down a speaker like that.

Given JL Audios motor topology and low distortion motor design the whole idea was based around a GOAL, not just a bit dumb speaker you can give gobs power to.

The mtx driver also has a wailing suspension a bit. One imo that simply isn't comparable to the w7 suspension. It's like someone forgot to FEA the surround or something and it just drops at like 1" or so rearward. Something not really favorable to happen.

If your interests are in getting what you pay for (if your spending this much) and your LISTENING to music.

The w7 is a superior woofer. MTX's marketing compaign focuses on a lot of ignorance.

Some say imitation is the highest form of flattery. Personally I think MTX swung around their money and resources a little too quickly before perfecting the speaker. Ran to market to target one speaker, the w7, with money, not performance.

Just my opinion though. I'd grab the w7 without thinking twice.

Before you buy either, check out RE Audio subs. They have the flatest BL curve on the market, so music reproduction is very accurate. They get low, hit hard and have incredible SQ. They are extremely versatile in enclosure usage as well.

You would be very surprised at what you could get for the money you are looking to spend on a W7 or a 9500. W7's will have their place in history for sure, and the new 9500's are designed well, although I personally don't know many competitors that will go into battle with them.

Just depends upon your ultimate musical goal and budget. Email me and I can give you tons of options either way if you need.

Kind Regards,
Matt
