Alpine type S and MRD-M605?
I am looking at getting 2 Alpine Type S 12s for my xB. RMS on these subs is 300w and peak is 900w. I have been looking for an amp and I came across the Alpine MRD-M605.
The thing I dont understand is it is rated at 600w x1@2 ohms at 14.4v and only 400w x1@2 ohms at 12v. Now, will I be able to get 600 watts out of this thing or will I only get 400. I dont know much about subs and amps, but arent you supposed to give the subs as close to RMS as you can?
I am only leaning to this amp becuase, ...I really like for everything to match, and I know Alpine makes a good amp that I can trust. I was considering before the Profile AP1000M http://cgi.ebay.com/Brand-New-Profil...QQcmdZViewItem because it is so cheap and the last profile amp I had (CL400) did good for my MTX 6000 series 10. I am willing to go up to $200.
Here is where opinons kick in...... Is there another amp that somebody reccomends. You see the wattage I am trying to get and the price point so lemme have it. \
So, what do you guys say?
Thanks,
Bob

Well, you have a lot of questions, I'm going to just skim over
some audio basics for you.
First off, just get the wattage close to, but not over what the
speakers are rated for. If they were rated at 300RMS and you
were only pushing 75-100watts, then yeah you'd be wasting
potiental.
A pair of speakers rated at 300w = 600watt capacity, being
pushed by an amp that runs between 400-600watts (depending
on the input voltage) is plenty fine.
Here is a tip for you, don't get hung up on the wattage. Here
is why; sound is "logarithmic." What this means is, twice the
wattage IS NOT twice as loud. 200 watts is NOT twice as
loud as 100watts. In fact, it's probably only 3db louder, which
is a slightly noticable difference. Slightly! Logarithmic means
you have to be 10 times the wattage to be TWICE as loud!
So, if you have a 400 watt amp, you would need 4000 watts
to be twice as loud!! So the difference between 400watts
and 600watts is small.
Have a quality amp and quality install will make far more
difference then matching up 600watts capable speakers with
exactly 600watts of power. These are analog devices, so they
aren't digital perfect, and you don't need to be with the specs.
Besides, specs are exageraged anways. LOL
So yeah, I think you are on the right track. Just stick with
quality components and you'll be fine!
