Default Anyone put cathodes in the trunk? (Updated pix)

Anyone? I wanted to do this, but I don't know where to splice the power from.

Also, are there any extensions for the wires that the cathodes use? I have 1 extra plug on my transformers under each of the front seats. So I'm thinking I could just run a wire from there to the trunk.

Update: Pictures on page 3.

Splice power from a 12 volt power source. You can always run wire from the battery (fuse it!), through the firewall, to the dash (so you can put a switch there), and back to the trunk.

You should not extend the white wires on the cathodes.

From my cathode page:

Can I extend the white wires past the transformer?

While it is possible, we do not recommend extending the white wires past the transformer. The cathodes may dim and flicker from the loss of voltage. If you want a cathode on each side of the dash, just buy two complete sets. You can however, extend the red and black power wires to reach the battery, or other power source. http://www.oznium.com/cathode-kit

I'm very unskilled at this. Where can I get the power from a 12v source? The tail lights?

here are some diagrams i made. You can buy something called a mini add a circuit that allows you to safely tap power from your fusebox. It plugs in like a fuse and can be bought for $5 with fuses included at any autostore. Just run a power wire to the back of the vehicle

The following diagrams are guides to help you figure out how to wire your cathodes. These are not the only ways but it is definately the simplest and easiest way to. Have fun!

Nice! Thank you!

What is the "mini-add-a-circuit" and where is a good place to mount the switch?

Chris,

Excellent advice! in just 3 hours I was able to figure all of this out, and get it all working on the first try. The diagrams were very helpful! Here's what I did, for the OP:
So I did a halfway decent job, and it looks terrible, as far as the wiring goes, but the light is great (only hooked up one). I basically was just trying to see if it would work, and now that it did, I will revise, and make it look good! Thanks for all the advice, this opens a lot of little doors for me.

PS: Where's a good ground point around the foot wells?

this is a mini add a circuit

it just plugs right in a fuse slot in the fuse box. It has a red (power) wire already attached to it so u can just hook up any accesory right to it. Its awesome!

And i like to mount my switches right where the hood release lever is. It makes for a pretty clean looking install, and its really easy...you can use zipties to mount it.

PS: Where's a good ground point around the foot wells?
take off the little panel to the left of your foot when you are sitting in th drivers seat. It pulls right off, but you'll have to give it a good tug. You will see a screw with a white wire going to it. That wire is being grounded. You can just use tht to ground everything, i know i did....and i know thats what toyota did

    hope this helps

Awesome, thank you. I'll have to buy that Mini-add-a-circuit at a local AutoZone?

And, where is the fuse box?

They didn't have them at Salvo Auto Parts...

There are several fuse boxes. The one you want is behind the panel that pulls off near your left knee. it has a push tab that you can reach around from under to disengage.

I went to both my local Autozone and Kragen and everyone was clueless about the mini-add-a-circuit...

Where else may I find these? Would Pepboys stock them? There must be somewhere in SoCal that sells them. T_T

guys, you don't *need* the add a circuit. if you cant find one, all you have to get is an inline fuse holder and a fuse. Maybe a ring terminal to clip onto the battery terminal if you don't have one.

ring terminal --> fuseholder w/ 3 or 5 amp fuse ---> through grommet in firewall ---> switch ----> cathode invertors ----> ground

here's a picture of my trunk mounted cathodes-

Well, if the Mini-add-a-circuit is fool proof, I will go with that.

Also, I got my CC from Oznium and it has the transformer and a switch. The transformer has a wire that plus into it then splits into a red/black wire. The switch also has two red wires, how do I wire these?

Is the black wire used for grounding?

red is power going to the tranformer (positive) black is power going away from the transformer (negative, aka ground).

run red wire from the battery/addacircuit, connect to one of the red wires on the switch. then connect more red wire to the the opposite side of the switch and run it to the red wire of the cathode transformer. now take black wire, connect it to the black wire comming out of the transformer and run the other end to a bolt that goes into the chassis.

    hop ethat helped.

Thank you very much that really cleared it. And when I connect the wires I use electrical tape right? Also, from the circuit to the switch, how does that work? I can't actually seen the Circuit but, just want to clear it up.

God I hope Pep Boys carries the Mini-add-a-circuit.

    there's a picture like 10 posts up.

your going to need some female crimp connectors to connect onto the prongs of the switch.

So the black end plugs into the car and the red w/ blue end connects to the other red wire right?

And female crimp connectors, got it. Thanks.
