Take a drill witha drill bit and begin drilling out the rivits. J/k Use a spacer ring of no more than an inch in thickness to space otu your new speakers. I have helped a coworker with his tC and it was really easy. We put in Components and such. Pretty much a full on system. Look for Dulanic's post.
if the tc speakers are anything like the xb, you can just cut the speaker magnet/cone, etc out of the hard plastic shell and re use it to space aftermarket speakers away from the door. (If you wanted to save a few bucks) (i know the factory 6.5 speakers are actually 6.75, so you will have to do something to make actual 6.5" fit)
Also use the smallest drill bit possible to drill the rivets out as it may be difficult to find real thick sheet metal screws to mount the new speakers.

BTW I had a hard time getting the panel off... I broke a clip and crack one of the styrofoam. SHiiiiit!
There's quite a bit of mounting depth, especially if you use a 1" spacer. I gutted the fatory speaker out of its shell like someone stated above and just re-used that with some sheet metal screws to re-attach the whole assembly to the door. I installed 6.5" Diamond Audio CM3 components - they had a 2.75" mounting depth and it was MORE than fine. If you used a 1" spacer you could probably easily install a speaker with a 4.5" mounting depth before you started having to worry about much of anything.

Did you use adhesive to mount to the sheet metal??
