In dash GPS options
I did a search on GPS and would like to get an update on what people are doing now.
I have a Garmin eTrex Legend with a dash mount. I also have a Palm IIIc and a laptop that can connect to an Earthmate receiver. I haven't installed anything in my new xB yet.
I wear reading glasses so the PDA and the eTrex are hard to see when they're dash mounted and I'm driving. I asked in an electronics store if there was anything that would allow any of these, or other, devices to connect to the auto video screens. I was told there were not.
I'm not interested in DVD, etc., etc. but I would like to do something permanent with GPS like the luxury cars have. With the receivers I have, it seems like there would be some cost effective way of inputting the signal to a LCD screen, even if it required another style receiver/controller, instead of the Earthmate, etc..
Any ideas?

I know you said you weren't interested in DVD .. but most, if not all, aftermarket headunits that have Nav. are going to be DVD... so here's a list
Eclipse AVN 2454: Double Din unit.. will look stock-ish ... it has everything including a built in 9 chan EQ. Audible directions and touchscreen. Warn ya .. it is expensive . (This is the head unit I purchased will have it installed next week I think)
Pioneer AVIC-N1: Single Din unit ... will need fit kit or fiberglass your dash for a custom fit/look. Plus side to this unit. You can play a DVD and use nav at the same time. also has other features that make it a nice choice. A bit less costly than the Eclipse unit.
there are others.. Kenwood makes a double din head unit but you have to purchase the nav seperatly ... cheaper to buy the Eclipse and a shorter install time

I'm really trying to use what I have and not spend a lot more on equipment. That's probably unrealistic. If so I can still use the laptop on the seat or the eTrex.

I went to a local auto electronics store to ask what was out there that might fit my needs. Their answer was pretty much "nothing". He did show me an $1800 alternative. I'm not ready to do that right now but this thing is very impressive. It also does a lot more than mapping.
