Default Ebay sub / enclosures?

I know i said in a previous thread that I didn't want a sub ....

I don't want to upgrade the head unit, as I don't want to lose the steering wheel controls.

I'd upgrade the speakers, but frankly it sounds like adding a sub and amp would be a fairly smart move before I think about that ...

Problem with a sub is that I'm not really thrilled about losing the trunk space. I use my car for plenty of stuff, including groceries, dogs, freinds, luggage etc, and a bazooka style sub is just way too big.

Then I spotted this on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/TOYOTA-SCION-XB-...QQcmdZViewItem

whats the general consensus on these? i've not seen too many of them on "real" store sites, but they are all over ebay. I assume the 10 inch sub in it isn't the best in the world, but I'm sure when funds allow it could be replaced easily enough?

What amp would you pair with this? budget is an issue.

Check out audioformz.com. I have one of their enclosures and love it. Your budget may run out buying one, though.

i've heard that these types of subs don't sound very good. I ran into the same problem. I am working on a box that fits in the trunk on top of the spare tire, and still allows you to use the floor of the trunk as well. Take a look at it.

I think a solution such as the one I utilize in my xB would be good for you. What I've done is to install the amplifier and then put a set of quick disconnect terminals on the left side wheel well trim piece so that I can quickly remove the sub. Here's a picture: If you went with a single 10" sub with about .5-.75 cubic feet of airspace you could take it out easily becuase the box would only have to be about 1' square. Mark

Not to take away from any of these options, but I think the best bet for you would be the QD-XB-DF from Elegonics/Quarter Wave Designs. http://www.elegonics.com/quarterwave.../DF_QD_XB.html You need a pretty shallow mount style 10 to make it work, but there are a lot of good options out there at a reasonable price. The enclosure mounts under the passenger's seat and with some quick modifications you can fit a good size amp under the driver's seat.

This is what I did in my wife's xB and the install is just about as stealth as you can get. You don't lose any interior or storage space and the sound is quite good. You can look back at some of my posts from mid-April to see what components I used.

As far as subwoofers are concerned I would look at the Diamond Audio DS10, or the new D1. The D1 is probably even cheaper if you are trying to save money. Also Elemental Designs and Image Dynamics make good subwoofers that would work well in that enclosure. I just happened to use Elemental Designs in my application and am very happy with it.

Hope that helps.

Now *thats* what I'm after!

It looks like that will be a winner for what I need. I need the cargo, but would love the sound.

Thanks for the link, I would imagine I'll be ordering it over the next few weeks!

James at Elegonics is a great guy and their products are awesome. When I bought my package I went all Elemental Designs. Because Elegonics is an ED dealer they offered me free shipping on everything and James installed and wired up the sub in the enclosure for me as well.

Very reasonable pricing for such quality equipment and excellent service.

Actually, ED gets a good thumbs up from most on the ECA boards, which is good considering that they only use the really high end stuff.

I have the Ebay/Scosche one you linked to above, with a Fosgate 500w amp under the passenger seat. For the money you can't beat it, it actually hits pretty hard. I intend to upgrade the driver at some point, but mated with the stock head unit it's a great solution. PM me if you need any more info...

Thanks for the link to this, I remember reading about it a while back. I'm thinking about augmenting my bass with one of these under the driver's set (sans jack) and another amp piggybacked under the passenger seat... it's pretty shallow so I could probably use the same sub as the Scosche enclosure.
Do you guys think there would be any problem with phase cancellation or anything weird like that?

That looks awesome ... I assume you dropped the ebay enclosure in, and cut a whole in the stock cover to get it looking that clean?

Right now, I'm tempted by either the underseat box, or the ebay enclosure, both which seem to be excellent value

Yeah you need to cut a hole in the lid or else it vibrates like a ****. I also used alot of foam tape strategically placed on the top of the enclosure to keep plastic-on-plastic vibrations to a minimum. After some time tuning it the result sounds very nice, clean to around 30 hz.

Depending on the Fosgate amp you have and the subwoofer design you could probably power both subs with that single amp. It could save you quite a bit of money. I am not sure what affect it would have on the sound to have the subs in the two locations though. I suppose it wouldn't make a whole lot of difference. Some of the much more knowledgeable audio guys can probably answer those questions. I know just enough to be dangerous.

I know you said you weren't crazy about losing cargo space, but if you change your mind, I've got a helluva deal on an AudioFormz package. See here:

Let me know if you're interested or have any questions.

Thanks,
