If I could do that than I would have but the problem is that when the door is hot one side of the dome light is hot, and when it's on full time the other side is hot.

So you did try it? If so, did you play with the dome light switch to get some more info whats going on electrically?

I am no expert by any means, but why wouldnt the dome light be on all the time if that was the case?

Because it's grounded in two different locations, and the dome light switch changes which one you use.

I gottcha...damn, I was hoping to find a quick, painless to install my puddle lights. I am open to suggestions on how to go about making exterior lights go on/off with the dome if anyone has some more ideas....

On another note MikeC, what is the viewing angle (degrees) on your LED's? The tightest I found was 15 degrees, but I was hoping for something tighter than that.

Heres some info of possible relevance:

How about using a dome light override switch?

Im confused? why couldn't you just tap into the red/yellow wire on the dome light? I have neons in my trunk that come on only when the trunk is open which is tapped into the red/yellow wire from the dome. Same deal would work for the door.

If you want it to work exactly like the dome light run power wire to the blue/yellow and to the red yellow. So when the dome light is set to the "on" postion the puddle lights will be gaining juice from the blue/yellow wire. When the dome light is set to "door" the puddle lights will be gaining juice from the red/yellow.

From my understanding, power is ALWAYS supplied to the dome, the switch on the dome engages or disengages the ground. If you tap off the power, the lights would always stay on.

I suppose you could tap off the ground, but then you would have to run a wire to your outside LEDS, which is something I am trying to avoid.

FYI - Does anyone know which fuse is for the dome? I looked last night and did not see dome listed on the fuse panel cover (interior)...is it the I/O slot? I am confused as to location. I was going to try to move my add a circuit to the dome slot to see how that would run my cathodes, but I did not find it clearly marked.

Hmmm...one thing missing is the 12V battery...where does that fit in with your equation.

I for one think using the add a circuit to the proper dome fuse holder should work, but some elementary research on this site seems to lead me to believe that it wont work.

I will check tonight if I can find the proper slot that fuses the dome.

The dome light fuse is in the engine bay, and the cover lists which one it is. It's blue, and it's closest to the driver in the line of five blue fuses.

Now, if I hooked the dome light wires together than the dome light would stay on all the time.

No matter what I appreciate the help from everyone because ultimately if I do figure out how to set my lights up it will be undoubtedly due to all of this brainstorming. So for that, I am greatfull.

Not quite what I wanted to do, but what if you tapped off the relay on the door? They would not light with the key fob, but they would light when you exit the vechicle.

Don't have my xb yet, but the dome has a pos and neg right? I don't get why connecting to the pos and neg wouldn't light your puddle lights. If you use the exact connecting points for the dome light for pos and neg, the electricity has to flow through the new wires at the same time the dome lights. What am I missing?

You have to look at the setup on the dome light, it is'nt that simple. If it was that easy, I would'nt have started this thread.
