Default lcd monitor/navigation system question

i wanted to add navigation to my future tC and was just researching. my friend said i could probably put a computer in for about $700 roughly plus the lcd monitor, navigation costs around like $1500? dunno just browsed several i found quickly. i'm pretty good with computers and the only thing i see a problem is with where to put it, but i could probably figure that one out. either remove center consol or something?

any opinions. i'd like to have a computer, i could probably just build one kinda cheap just to put microsoft streets and trips and watch dvd's and playstation or something?

running the lap top off of the rechargable batteries. Without having to power a monitor, they last for 6-8 hours. When they die i just plug the laptop into a gamers invertert that plugs into the ciggy lighter. the monitor can be found at wither mp3car.com or mp3player.com. The monitor sits in the opening above the glove box. The laptop is under the passanger seat. The gps unit is behind the monitor. I run a floppy keyboard rolled up next to the e-brake and a wireless laser mouse there as well. Waiting for the trim pieces to be made before i "debut it"

carputer is cool but what are you really gonna use it for? I had one before but ended up removing it and installing a real car nav. The carputer plays mp3 well but so does and ipod. Navigation isn't as accurate imo and hard to control with a keyboard. There is a lot that goes into a nice carputer to compete with real car audio stuff. I think carputer stuff just isn't quite there yet.

love it love it love it. Plugs right into the harness as it's pretty much designed as a toyota upgrade.

And yes, the scion cover still opens and closes over it.

In his sig... Eclipse AVN-2454
There is a newer version out also. Use the search as there are a lot of threads on the different Eclipse Nav units.
I've seen the newest version on eBay for about $1500. Runs at least $2000 or more at most car audio shops.

Get a pda with GPS. You wont always need it either. Only when going somewhere unfamiliar.
I use a Dell Axim X30 with bluetooth gps. It works great for me. Plus you can use the pda for many other things.
