Default Question about mounting and amp to sub box

I read somewhere recently, think it might have been here on SL, that you shouldn't mount your amp to your sub box because it could cause damage to the amp due to the vibrations. Is this really the case? I had an amp mounted directly on top of my sub box before when I had a different car and different system of course. I had no problems. I currently have my amp in the extra space compartment by the spare tire. Since my box takes up the whole trunk I hate leavin the amp under there and always have to take out the box to change settings on my amp. Would it really be horrible if I mount the amp to the top of the box, whether it be directly or with some kind of amp rack bolted on top? Thanks in advance for the help.

I don't think the box is going to be vibrating... The subs, yes, the box no

Go ahead and mount it on the box!

Yeah this is a subject that gets a lot of people to disagree, but my experience has been that I never had a problem.

personally i wouldn't do it. if you actually think about it yes the subs are vibrating and the subs are connected to the box so there is going to be some vibration throughout the box.

Many tube woofers (Bazooka, Audiobahn) have built in amps.
These amps are mounted directly to the tube.

Just think....
Amps are made to power subs, dont you think manufacturers take in to account the amount of vibration???

There are a few reasons not to mount the amp to the box,
but I've not found it to be much of an issue in car audio.

If I was in a recording studio, home theater, or listening room
I would totally keep them seperate.

The fact is, capacitors don't like being shaken up. But car
audio gear is built for the abuse of being on the road. If they
weren't, they sure wouldn't last long with the shyte installs
I've seen on the road!

It's up to you if you want to do it.

^^great point. i never thought of it that way. I know my box vibrates, but it's minimal because the MDF is so thick. It's not like it's being tossed around or anything. Thanks for all the input guys. I think I will still buid some sort of rack for it but I'm gonna bolt the rack the the box. Nothing spectacular, just something to hold the amp up a little bit so it's something different than just bolting it directly to the box.

the ONLY reason i would not mount my amp to the sub box is because if someone steals it ____ they just took ur amp and subs in a combo but yes i prefer to mount it somewhere else because vibrations are bad!

The only reason not to is, as mentioned right above my post, that it gift wraps a theif a system. Other than that, no damage would be done to the amp from mounting it on the box. Car audio amplifiers are made to be abused. If vibration, etc were an issue, don'y you think that the manufacturers would recommend mounting them on a shock absorbing mount, as when you hit a bump in the road, etc, it'd be subjected to vibration, not to mention, where are the majority of install's amplifiers located? In the trunk/rear area of a vehicle. That means that they are going to be in the general area, an in lots of cases, in close proximity to teh sub. As long as it's mounted to the box in a manner that will allow heat dissipation, there won't be a problem. Don't mount it to somewhere on the box that'll be covered, obviously, as it won't let the heat out of it quickly enough, and you'll eventually drive it thermal. Don't invert mount it(upside down) on the box, as the dissipation of heat will go right back into the amp through teh cooling fins. Mounting it to the box is actually, in a way, good for it, as it's mounted to a non-conductive surface and won't pick up noise/interferance from it. I rarely mount to a sub box unless a customer requests it, however, because of the theif aspect. That's my major reservation about it. It will not, however damage the amp. If it does, it's a crappy amp to begin with.

^^ tell me your opinion lol

Well, I mounted it to the top of the box for the meantime and I will take pictures tomorrow. I have an Audiobahn A8000T 800W amp and I mounted it veritically from the box so the controls are right up front when I open the hatch and the wires are hidden between the box and the backseat. This of course means that the amp is actually backwards so "Audiobahn" reads upside, which is the only thing I didn't like...but oh well, it works.
