Since even the trip odos only log tenth miles, I usually suggest 100 miles so that the "accuracy" isn't lost in the large steps between digits.
For example if you go 10 miles according to the GPS, and the odo shows 10 miles, are you sure it's not 10.0999 miles on the odo (a ten percent error)?
The longer the base distance the more accuracy, but you can get reasonable accuracy if you do the readings as follows: reset trip odo to 0.0, travel exactly to the point where the odo first indicates 10.0 miles, and no farther. Compare the GPS distance to 10.0 miles and make your corrections.
The thing to do in calibrating the odo, is to use the odo as the base of when to start and stop, not the GPS. That way your not swiming somewhere in the 10 percent potential error range.
If one is using mile markers instead of GPS, the markers are used as the start/stop and the distances must be long enough to get past the coarseness of the odo distance display.

Actually there is a problem with a GPS check too because my GPS reads 0.1mph resolution and I am not sure if it should be at 0.6 before the SvanGaugeII reads the next mph higher or not. In any event as the tires wear (like in 10,000 miles) the error approaches 0.5mph anyway.

I haven't watched mine for a while, but when I did, it varied, of course, depending on outside air temp.
In mild weather it was about 4-6 degrees above ambient, in hot weather, only a couple, in cold weather maybe 10 or so (all while moving steadily).
At a stop, the intake air temp went up quite a bit, but would drop back down again shortly after the box was moving again, and the intake structure could cool off a little.
Others may have different experiences (and besides, this is trying to remember it from months ago, and I wasn't all that interested as soon as I found the temp wasn't all that bad).

That air temp sounds about right a few to 10 above - I actually check it to see how hot it is outside - I run with the windows closed almost all the time - still getting used to power windows and remembering to close them when I get out especially the rear windows. Not too crazy about getting the local insect life inside my box - had a HUGH beatle in the drivers side hinge area earlier in the week - I am talking 2 inches in length and an inch across - the kind that has pincers that can dig into your leg - I pushed on its leg with a stick and it push back! I could not knock him loose with a stick. I think he moved into the left front fender the next evening.

I gotta clean up the wiring. I got the horsepower xgauge working and I hit 118bhp this morning at about 2/3 throttle. Should be fun to keep an eye on...
