silver trim on automatic knob

I have painted mine as well. Actually, i had mind painted while my GFs front bumper was being painted, so there is 3 coats of clear ontop of the Hot Lava.
What i use is a dental tool ( you can use a small bladed screw driver. Go between the silver piece and the black park of the shifter. Surprisingly enough the black part is rubber, so it will give. Going around the trim piece gently pry it out of the rubber shifter. If i remember correctly the top is the easiest to get out and first to pop out. Just take you time and keep working it out. I think that there are 4 little tabs that hold it inside the rubber portion of the shifter.
Now that you have it out, it will be held in place by the wiring of the OD switch. On both sides of the OD switch are 2 plastic tabs holding the switch in place. GENTLY pry the tabs out and the OD switch pops out. There is also a tiny zip tie that hold the wiring in place towards the bottom of the trim piece. Cut that and Bobs your Uncle.
When you re-instal just pop in the switch into the trim piece, then push the trim piece back into the rubber shifter.
