Are the speakers out of phase? Is the crossover set too high?

there usually are ones built into the amp. . . look for a switch that says either Low Pass or High Pass, or Low or High. . .
Phase means you have + speaker wire connected to + terminals, and - to -, on both the amp, sub, and high-low convertor.

x2

Tell us what amp you have, or better yet, post a pic of the dials on the amp.

Default subs ?

http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/produ...h%20Amplifiers

theres a link to the amp i have, doesnt show the controls but ill tell you what i have. there is a decible crontrol on the amp along with one on a remote. there is frequency control from like 40 to 400 hz, and there is a crossover built into the amp. i never knew, but after looking i found it, it can be switched from LP ( low pass) to middle pass to HP, it is set on LP so that the subs will only pick up the bass. but like i said, the subs are catchin the low end of the music too, like playing the low notes on the vocals and what not, it makes the whole system sound bad because it is sort of echo-ey, ya know? oh well, any thoughts?

Frequency control is another crossover. . . you can adjust that further. . . set it to low pass (LP), and adjust the frequency control until you have it right where you want it. . . smaller subs should be set higher, larger subs set lower; in general. The hz you set it at should be the frequency cut off(amp only puts out frequencies lower than that indicated). The lower the number, the lower the frequency(note). The higher you set it, the more "echo-ey" sound you will get.

turn the frequency to anywhere from 50 - 125 hz... depending on how you like your music... that should get rid of most of the vocals...

it all depends on the sub. . . I like 8's to have a lil mid bass in em, and 12's to have only the low's. . . and 10's right smack dab in the middle.

Is there an x10 button on the amp somewhere?
