Tints Laws
IWFA - INTERNATIONAL WINDOW FILM ASSOCIATION. Most current and updated list.
The list in the tech section has been WAY out of date and inaccurate since before it was placed there.

Both the tint shop and the IWFA site claim you can have any amount on the rear windshield. But the Highway patrol site says "window tint must allow 50 percent light transmittance on the rear and side windows". And that's the same info the cops gave me when I got pulled over late last year for my 35% side windows
Moral of the story, find the website/laws put up BY YOUR STATE. Don't trust these other sites or what the window tint guys tell you.
Took me about 5 seconds to do a Google search for the New Jersey info

Q: What are the New Jersey tint laws?
A: Basic tint laws for New Jersey are as follow:
No after market tint may be applied to front driver and passenger windows. After market tint on rear windows may not cover the 3rd brake light. Windshields may only be tinted 20% down from the top to help avoid sun glare. No mirror tint allowed anywhere on the vehicle.

do what i did, i printed out the illinois law and i keep a copy in the car for reference. so that once i get my tint done, i'll have it.
keep current too, because laws do change, but with a change should also come warnings and not fines.

I just read the Ohio State page - and it makes ZERO sense. For some reason, I'm not in the least surprised law enforcement does not acurately know or enforce it's own laws.
I qoute -> "On Ohio registered vehicles, window tint must allow 50 percent light transmittance on the rear and side windows, and 70 percent transmittance on the windshield. In other words, the tint can not be darker than 50 percent on the side and back, and 30 percent on the windshield. "
ok... First sentence OK, then falls apart quickly from there. Last part, "and 30 percent on the windshield". With that one line right there, anyone who tints there windshield in Ohio with standard 35% Smoke film will have their ticket thrown out of court when they present a printout of that webpage. That paragraph says two entirely different things in one breathe. 70% darkest allowed, and then 30% darkest allowed. (yes, I know what they must've been THINKING, but they said it completely backwards and made the 'law' invalid by doing so.)
ALSO - AND MORE IMPORTANT!! The site says "Light transmittance of 50 percent does not apply on the windows behind the driver if there are outside left and right side mirrors.". They have not made a car in 20 years that doesn't have a left AND right side mirror. They are saying, in effect, the law does not apply to windows from the B-pillar back so lopng as you have both outside rearview mirrors. That Ohio law is so full of holes it is impossible to enforce against anyone who doesn't mind fighting the ticket.
The Ohio info here is identical to what the tint shop told me.... HOWEVER, it's NOT the same as what the Ohio State Highway Patrol website says.

I would have no problem enforcing that law, as written.
Sorry.
and I'd have no problem killing the ticket in court - so far I've batted a 1.000, and having served pro bono on these cases dozens of times in many states, I can tell you after reading the text of the Ohio law, it's poorly written and if a lawyer with half a brain ever got hold if it, it would be tossed of the books. Very few states have rock solid, accurately written statutes on the matter. Which is exactly why so many states do in fact get their laws on the matter tossed, someone decides it's worth a fight - and they won. Georgia being the most recent example. Although there have been many others, some of which I personally helped in.
Tint laws are a GOOD thing, they SHOULD BE enforced, but with intelligence and prudence in the matter. States like Ohio limiting to 50% (and others who are even more strict) are being short-sighted and ignorant on the issue. For reason of brevity, I won't cover WHY 50% is unacceptable, but it is and there have been gov't funded studies that confirm that. BUT on the other hand - I also believe if you ever get caught with 5% on every single window of your car - you should have your license suspended 90 days, first offense, no appeals! 2nd offense, permanently.

And they didn't somehow make "the law invalid by" hiring a web designer who phrased something poorly.
Seriously, have you ever seen the text of a law that's worded in Question and Answer form?
Get real. It's a freakin' FAQ
Here is a good site for CA
http://www.caraudiodiscount.com/acat...car_audio.html
Windshield Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 4 inches of the windshield.
Front Side Windows Must allow more than 70% of light in.
Back Side Windows Any darkness can be used.
Rear Window Any darkness can be used.
