My friend has that shift **** on his celica, and his shift rod started to rust. If I end up with what I call "the gonad shift ****," I'll probably put heatshrink tubing, heat it up, then keep it like that..*shrug* sounds like a good idea... You can also get a new shift boot...

Reversing chrome piece under the shift ****.
Yes, replacing the stock shift **** can leave you with a wide and rather odd looking chrome piece right below the replacement ****. I remember several people at Exposed who had changed their ***** in their xb's but had not reversed the chrome piece.
When I was there, I remember I told a couple of people how to reverse it. I didn't like the way the nice new **** looked with the wide chrome piece. This is what I did:
1. Remove the **** from the stickshift.
2. pry off the bottom of the boot from the center console
(be careful, it is easy to break the clips that hold the boot to the console).
3. Take the boot off the stick shift.
4. Turn the boot inside out.
5. On the inside, the chrome piece is held by a wire fastener, take the fastener off.
6. Take the chrome piece off and reverse it.
7. Follow the reverse steps to put the wire fastener and boot back on where they belong.
I found that reversing the chrome piece works if you have a stock shifter.
It would not go into the TRD short shifter that I got later. Eventually I returned the TRD shifter after I found it defective.
Anyways, I put the reversed chrome piece again on the stock shifter.
if you reverse it you will find that the other side of the chrome piece is tapered and makes a better match with your new shift ****.
