Default Humming Noise from Wheel Bearings?

I've had to replace CV axles and bearings but there was always a slight hum it's the tranny now 267,000 miles. Mine has more play on driver side it feels like the slip diff is worn out.

It didn't actually fail and took a few years to even get worse but if I hold the driver wheel from spinning and let the passenger side go while in gear it makes an awful sound.

If you're turning right and it sounds like a plane taking off left bearing if you're turning left and you hear the sound right bearing.

Ok........so if the axle shaft on the drivers side (where it goes into the transmission) has lots of "play" in it, this is an indication that the transmission stub shaft bearing is failing and will need to be replaced. To replace this particular bearing would require the transmission to be removed from the vehicle, completely disassembled and a new bearing installed. Not a cheap fix by any means.

That being said, typically, when this particular bearing fails, it DOES NOT create a humming type of sound while driving. It creates a "thumping" type of sound while driving over roads with bumps/potholes, etc.....

You might be able to get away with replacing one or both front axle shafts to eliminate the humming sound.......the humming sound coupled with a bad transmission stub shaft bearing could be due to one (or both) shafts wearing out. They wear out, the c/v joint loses lubrication and smoothness and starts to hum.

Drive the car down a straight road. swerve lanes left to right. Listen for the intensity of the humming sound. Swerve left, loud humming? Replace right (passenger) axle shaft........swerve right, loud humming? Replace left (drivers) axle shaft......this would be the same way to determine if the actual wheel bearings are bad.......it's a 50/50 between bad wheel bearings or bad axleshafts.

Hi,
I had in the past many noises when driving.
1. Was replace all new tires.
2. The automatic transmission was verified and find OK (including the converter).
3. After the last test drive my old car mechanic (and the best) find the problem.

The noise was from the front pad brakes. Was fix in one moment.
I am happy that I do not have to replace the axle (before I will retired this car Scion xB 2004).

And now you know what a "slip diff" is, right?

Um, yea. Nothing like the internet to clarify things.
