Default are my struts / shocks blown?

when i push the damper piston in, the shaft takes a long time to push itself back out (like over night for the fronts). i thought they were blown and bought new dampers and then found out that only gas (nitrogen charged?) dampers will extend themselves and that oil dampers completely rely on the spring. can anyone confirm or deny this and tell me what type the sportivos are?

thanks!
