Default Auto-off Headlights

Has anyone found a way for the headlights to turn off automatically? I just bought my new 2006 Xb and I'm not use to turning off the Headlamps Manually. I don't want to end up with a dead battery....[/b]

I forget all the time, but the buzzer saves me. I made the mistake once, on a previous car, of not bothering to repair the seemingly unimportant buzzer when it failed. I push started the car, but I don't remember if a made it home because unknown to me my alternator was sick and did fail shortly thereafter.

Sorry to hear about the alternator, and yes the buzzer is loud and annoying. I would like to Remove the buzzer and have auto-off lamps. Would that be GREAT.

I did a quick google search, and here is one. Don't know anything about it, but they are out there for retro-fit. I hope to look into this option/mod in the future.

well a simple way is to hook a relay in line w/the power or ground wire to your healamps ($2 a relay at almost any auto parts store, even walmart)

wire it in line with an accessory wire that turns on when the car does (i.e. cigarrette lighter, so your lights turn on w/just accI in case you need them, but not th motor on or AccII)

Voila! problem solved. keep in mind, if the fuse to the cigarrette lighter blows (i cant imagine how, i dont use mine anyway) then your h.lights wont turn on - HOWEVER- mount the relays in an accessable place under the hood and you can override them w/a simple swap of the wires, or a spare fuse, paperclip (only if it's the ground wire) or something of that nature (note: Large Paper clip, not the small ones)

pm me if you need help - i lose threads sometimes

Great idea to do it this way. Also may want a bypass switch available just in case some time down the road you need your lights on with the car shut off. That auto-headlight off switch I provided the link to does a little more than this simple mod would do, but it is all on how much you want to put into it. Again, great and easy way to accomplish the task given.

Thanks for all the Great Info, all of you have been most helpful. I think the relay is going to work just fine. After completion of my first modification, I'll let you know how I did.

Thanks

hopefully you see this before you work - i just thought it over, and make sure you put the relay in a way to cut off the ground wire (it'll turn both high and low off)

then wire a switch to turn the relays back 'on'

if you wire the relay to cut the low beam light, then you'll still have the high beam that you can use w/o turning the car on.

the other thing: when you do this wire up, i'd suggest to take the bulbs out of the harnesses and then turn the light switch (as if you were to 'leave' the lights on, see if it buzzes, or if it actually senses the continuity of the bulb being present. your headlights may turn off, but your parking lamps will be on.)

! epiphany ! - you need to cut the power to the lights module/relay. or your parking lamps will stay on! (that's why the module online had so many wires.. now i get it...)

crayonBOX,

I haven't started my mod yet, I had planned to do it this weekend. My plans have now changed!!!! It sounds like you have given this alot of thought. Since this is my first modification and I really don't want to screw this up, I think I may try and hold off on this for now. I think maybe I will draw out this wiring design first. But if you have anymore thoughts, please by all means post them.

Thanks
