Roof Spoiler Mounting Question
Hi guys,
I know this may come off ricey, but I don't mind getting flamed, and I'm still hoping to follow through with it.
A while ago, I bought a used spoiler off of ebay (I know, some of you may already smell the rice cooking) that caught my fancy and I'm finally looking to get it installed. However, the spoiler is made for a trunk of another car (possibly a mustang), and that being the case, I was hoping to mount it to the roof (not the hatch) of the car.
When I brought it up to a friend of mine who owns a body shop, he mentioned that it would be a bad idea, although I'm not sure if its just because he considers the idea too ricey.
My questions are:
1) Would the roof be able to support the weight of the spoiler? My guess is that it weighs at least 20 to 30 pounds.
2) Would it be a difficult endeavor to install the spoiler since it would be on the roof and not the hatch door? (Although I don't see how it would be much different from installing a roof rack.) Is it much different from installing a roof rack? Would the felt (or ceiling cloth) need to be pulled off and re-applied?
3) Would I be inviting a strong possibility for a leaky roof?
The look that I'm attempting comes very close to the spoiler in the link below, although I believe the one I have may be just a few
inches taller.

Any constructive advice would be immensely appreciated!

1) You shouldn't have any problems with the weight at all. The OEM spoiler only weighs about two/three pounds.
2) Installing the spoiler on the roof would more than likely require dropping the headliner. Dropping the headliner is a very easy process, it just takes a bit of time. Roof racks bolt down at the sides are are removable... the wing you are planning to install will be a permanent placement, at least permanent unless you plan on filling those holes later by doing some body work.
3) Your roof will leak if you do not install the spoiler correctly. Make sure you have a gasket for mounting the spoiler and use some form of silicon seal from the bottom of the roof.
Alrighty then. Props for taking the flames man. I personally hate the top mounted spoilers on boxes with a passion. I've never found one that looks remotely decent and their functionality is moot. Anyway, I've spoken my beef. Good luck on the install and post up some pics when you get it done.

if you decide to drill it down (because if you double stick it someone will be happy to pull it off for you) make sure you measure twice or 3 times and drill once. take down the head liner and use plenty of silicone.
but i think you need to post a pic of it so we can get a better idea of it. and when you do post it, be prepared to be chewed out hardcore. ill be one of those people if it looks like crap.

Thanks for the insight! Actually my car had been involved in a hit and run, so it's getting fixed right now. Both the car and spoiler are at the body shop now, so I can't post pics just yet, but if I do install it, I promise to post them up.
I've got my flame retardant under-roos ready so feel free to flame and not hold back.
Thanks guys!

Just for reference, are there any images on SL of other boxes with roof mounted spoilers? I remember seeing the over-customized yellow hotwheels in the Rice and Taters thread, but are there others?

I could see a roofmount spoiler looking quite tasteful if the spoiler is designed specifically to fit the box like a glove (like the FAB kit or the OEM kit). Just keep in mind the spoiler could only be for aesthetics more than anything.
Just out of curiosity, is this spoiler a custom made unit or one we can get a picture of on another car?
I just rememberd that I did take a cell phone pic a while ago. Of course if I did go through with it, the spoiler would be painted to match the rest of the car. It sits about four inches above the base.
Thanks again for putting up with my repeated questions!
