so my dad has a 2003 explorer. i think its pimp that whenever he does the keyless entry a light shines down from his side mirror. does anyone have any clue as to how to do this? or has anyone done it?
*cough*done.
I swear to God if you intellectual property thievin' people don't quit jacking my 'mods for the box' ideas....
It's ok I suppose... I've got a bunch of ideas - and if my dumbass can think them up, someone else will too (but I'm still not gonna spill on others until someone else does it too.. I'm stingy like that...
)
Anyhow - been done. No one else has it yet that I know of - but good chance of it. When I installed the JDM folding mirror internals into the USDM external peices I was thinking about blinkers and such - didn't do that becuase of the fender blinker (overkill) - BUT - I did do, instead, ground spotlights. They come on with the dome lights.
VERY bright. MUCH MUCH MUCH brighter than anything ANY OEM ever put out, they're almost blinding if you're dumb enough to bend over and look under the mirror right at the light (like staring at the sun - but, if you stare at the sune, you deserve it.) They're small sealed beam halogen bulbs - like the ones used in high end track lighting (the little small artsy style that hang from the ceiling on long skinny wires...). - They're rated at about 3000 hours for bulb life - we'll see. 3000 hours should last the life of the car easily (it's not likely you'll have the doors open with the dome on 3000 total hours! That's 125 days of total on time.) Even if they don't, they're inexpensive.
Yes, they run on 12v - sorta, mine are 'rated' at 11.7v as they are supposed to run off a 120vAC current run through a small transformer converted to the 11.7vDC. I just skipped the transforming part.
Now that the cat's out of the bag, I'll maybe charge the camera and take a night pic.
I believe the bulbs can be has in various colors (as they are sold for 'dramatic' lighting) and you could easily slip a color filter in front of the lens. The only thing is that bulb and lens changes require mirror removal and opening (no BIG deal, but required all the same)

I'm just playing with you (i'm not actually mad.... lol). I too thought it was a good idea - one that I had gotten off an OEM car.
It's easy enough to do if you got the time.
You get credit for the idea though - you were the first to post about it
this is the bulb basically - (I just went and looked for a fast pic, it's not the one I used, but it's close and gives you a pretty good idea

*EDITED * - *ADDED PHOTO*

figured you werent mad
cause if you really were, id be a little freaked out. heh.
so did you just drill and dremmel a whole to fit the bulb? cause i wanted to incase it like the side markers but have it be a bit smaller with a brighter bulb. also, what did you wire it to?
