suicide doors on rear
I think I may go ahead and do it. Not that I'm all to terribly interested - it's not exactly a challenging project - just seems to many (automotive newbies typically) say it's not doable. On an xB - it's a whole hell of a lot more doable than on some other vehicles with very similiar shaped rear door styles - *cough**cough* Chrysler 300c.... rear's been done to death already... PTCruiser... nothing new... GenII 4dr Blazer... nothing new...and others...
On the xB pictured - the purple puerto rican one - those doors would be damn near impossible to open from the outside with the windows rolled up. The door handle is still in the stock location, leaving the leverage points (now) backwards to pull the door open when you lift the handle. They could've conceivably used a popper that's activated by pulling the handle.... but I doubt it. With all the welding and repainting that was involved in the fab process, it would've been a near non-issue to relocate the OEM door handles to the front edge (which would look better than shaving IMHO - it would look like Toyota meant it like that). Swap the passenger handle to the driver side and vice-versa ... THAT would nice.

I've talked to a few old school hot rod shops around here and the general consensus is that, yes it can be done, but it wouldn't last long. The metal is just too thin to make it strong enough. Even if you boxed it all out and reinforced it they think the doors would sag within a month.
problem is they're "old school" -- they undoubtedly know thier ****. but to many old hot rodders don't think very far down the line. You aren't affixing two hinge plates to sheet metal and calling it a day. - sure, it WOULD sag almost right away if that were the case. Heck -- the owner of the frankenscion should know that it could be done and done RIGHT (not sag in a month - or ever). This is a matter of extensive LONG bracing. A perfect example is the 300c - that door is much harder to suicide than the xb's (much smaller vertical space to work with) and on some of those jobs you could practically hang on the door and not get it flex - done right. ----- everyone watch....once this is done (right) and a few people look at it... then it's gonna be all over the place and everyone will go from saying "yeah... sure... with enough money... and it wont last" to "oh that... do a search.. it's old news and to easy of a mod to do"..

Boricua!!!
Wow, eating my words! I totally thought it was a fake in that last pic.
Damn that's great though. I just wish I had the guts to do it myself!
Let's hear from the builder now. Any chance you want to come to Iowa this May and hang at the show?

BTW, I strongly recommend heading over to scionevolution.com and checking the PR chapter thread. They have some SICK rides out there and somebody is making a killing doing vertical doors on those cars!
