bB does stand for "Black Box." I've read it on several occasions, and even in an official Scion press release, if I remember correctly.
ist, I have no clue of. I've heard the same thing as BeQuietAndDrive mentioned, being a jack-of-all-trades—"machinist," "chemist," etc. And Geotpf is right, it's a very Japanese thing to do.
Although, I always wondered if, instead, it was the German second-person "is" (er ist, sie ist, es ist), just giving a weird name.
