Default Car over heated and stalled

I have a 2006 xb.

I was driving to work and noticed my car began to over heat, the red light started flashing. I was close to work so i decided to try and make it verse pulling over to the side of the interstate.

About a minute went by and check engine, trac off, and VCS lights turned on. I pulled over to the shoulder and stalled. I had it towed to work, and it is currently sitting out in the shade. After letting it cool down some, I tried to turn it on to see what it would do, and electrically it all seems to work, but it makes a strange noise now when trying to turn over. Also, I noticed water from the coolant tank was everywhere.

A buddy at work took a quick peek and said he thinks could be the timing chain. I got a mechanic who is going to come take a look later today, but I am freaked out. I am worried I blew the engine or something else crazy.

Anyone ever have these series of things happen? I cant imagine how much an engine change would cost, or timing chain.

Cooling system is like circulatory system.. if you have an issue with one part then you need to check the rest of it as it was stressed out.

First thought is a water pump.. if it shuts off/breaks then there is no circulation and it will overheat within minutes. Leaks like crazy at that point.
The only way to drive it is.. turn off the motor at least 20 minutes.. then drive for maybe 5... that's even pushing it.

The thermostat starts in a closed position.. restricting but not stopping water flow.. allowing the coolant to warm up.. as it heats up the spring expands and water flow is increased. Over heating a car can damage the thermostat..

The radiator is like our lungs, exchanging the hotter temps for cooler ones in this case.

Radiator hoses are like our veins.. needs to be checked now for any cracks/leaks.. especially after overheating.
