I buy the large (household A/C) filters at Wal-Mart for $1.99. You can cut about 5 filters out of it. That's only 40 cents each.
They are pretty thin, but they catch all of the leaves, bugs, dirt and dust just fine... And I don't mind swapping it out every other month or so.
