Default Do you have 2005 xB service manual?

This is a quick question for someone who has the 2005 Scion xB repair manuals (RM1116U1 & U2).

In the 2004 manuals (RM1031U1 & U2) the tire size spec'd is 185/65R15 and I'm just wondering if that is true of the 2005 manuals, also.

(The JDM Toyota bB comes stock with the 65 series tire, the Scion xB with the 60 series in the US even though the 2004 xB manual specs the 65. This seems to account for the the speedometer error, about 3-4 percent optimistic with the 60 series tires, and close to 'right on' with the 65's...)

No problems, just curious.

From the 2004:

Don't have either manual, but have been playing with tire and wheel sizes. My 05 came with 185x60-15's. I found them a little harsh for ride quality (I'm 62+ and need my comfort :-) ) I traded with a Corolla owner for his 14" wheels and tires, 175x65-14. Was surprised that the much smaller tire/wheel combo made the odometer essentially dead on accurate, but the speedo was about 4mph fast at 60mph (actual 56).
I switched tires to 195x65-14 BFG's and was back to the same as stock 15's as far as speedo/odo concerned. The speedo is about .8mph slow and the odo is shy 4.8 miles in 100. BUT, the ride quality is much better now, and I feel the handling is much better as well.

Maybe try moving your thread to the xB General forum. I seems more likely that someone would have the 2005 manuals there.

I'm interested in the answer to your question too.

Yeah, I suppose you're right - I was just trying to keep it in the more directly related area (Tread and Butter), but it looks like I probably should move it over, at least until an answer shows up.

Thanks for the suggestion.

2005 SCION xB REPAIR MANUAL (RM1116U)
This is from the '05 manual. It appears to be the same. This is an electronic version for the '05 manual. I have not checked what my '05 paper manual says.

Tomas, I just bought the 05 manual a few weeks ago. It states the tire wheel system(from April 2004) as 185/60R15, 29 psi cold inflation.
Hope this helps.

The 65 series is so much cheaper too, compare to the 60 series

If I had an xB and had to get new tires, I'd get the 65 series

Walt, in the 2004 manual it lists the tire size (and pressure) in two places, once as 65 series, once as 60 series. The place where it shows 65 is in the vehicle specifications (Section 3), and the place where is shows 60 is in the inspection lists (section 2.

It is probably similar in the 2005 manuals since I now have two different answers.

I suspect that the xB manual is based on the bB manual, and they changed it to 60 in one place and forgot the other...

The speedo is more accurate with the 65 series tires, so it appears that the change to 60 series tires on the US model was likely made without corresponding mechanical/electrical changes to the base vehicle.

Using the JDM spec's 65's opens up the replacement tire choices quite a lot, and even allows use of one of my favorites (better abd cheaper). :D

I got the answer I gave from the same section you have shown above. Section 3-29. I did include the revision at the bottom, perhaps that can help. Where in section 2 did you get the other number? I can look at mine in a couple hours when I get home and tell you what it says.

Interesting. My manual is Vol 2, and the first 5 sections are listed in light print in the index but are not in this vol. They are in vol 1. So, I can't tell you what is listed under Service Specs. But, as I posted earlier, under Tire and Wheel, it is 185/60x15.
On two recent trips to N. GA from here in Orlando, I took careful measurements of milage on the odo as compared to the mile markers on I75. Back in Dec, with stock tires, I made the trip and logged 551 going and 549.7 coming back. (It was downhill coming back so should be shorter ;-).
Last mont I made another trip, this time with my new 195/65x14" tires. As measured with the origional tires, these are maybe 1/16" taller as best I could measure. Anyway, the June trip gave 549 going up and 551 coming back. I know where the extra miles were (a gas station further off the interstate) so I kinda got what I expected.
Now, in both trips I made several measurements over 100 miles on the mile markers and my odo was consistantly 4.8 miles short. However, the speedo, measured with stop watch numerous times averaged out to being less than 1 mph off, reading higher than actual.
Now, all this is facinating but worthless info, especially since the speedo can't be calibrated as far as I know. But I do factor in the milage that I'm not registering when computing fuel economy. I amounts to about 15 miles on a typical fillup for me, which is over 1.5 mpg on average.

Here are the two places where tire size is listed in my 2004 xB Service Manuals:

I suspect the information carried over to the 2005 manual's without change.

====

As to the odo and speedo being off in opposite directions, that's a fascinating oddity, and one that can not and will not be corrected by changes in tire size.

If one corrects the odo to reflect true miles traversed, the speedo will be 5-6% optimistic, if one corrects so that the speedo is correct, the odo will show 5-6% fewer miles than actual.

Basically any choice there is a 'compromise,' and since one get's ticketed for speed not miles travelled, I'd opt for correct speedo readings and manual corrections in figuring MPG and such (just as Walt and I are already doing).

I compared my speedo and odo to my GPS and got numbers similar to those Newtmaker reported. The speedo was accurate to within 1 mph (as far as I could tell while paying attention to the road) and the odo was 4.7% off, reading 7.7 mi instead of 8.08 mi. The tires on my xB are 185/60R15.

Ain't those GPS units neat!! A friend and I went to West Texas in May in his minivan and he had a GPS hooked up to his laptop with one of those high detail nav programs installed. When we crossed the MS river, it showed exactly when we were at the river edge. Just the hand held unit was simply incredible to me. The speed, altitude, and distance functions were really fun to play with!
