Default Dome light wiring question....

This question is for the wiring geniuses of the board.

Can this light http://www.clubxb.com/forums/f17/714...-roof-console/or one similiar be wired to come on when the doors are opened and also when the the lights are pressed individually as map lights? There is no door on/off switch on the light housing that is why I am asking. I know how to wire it off the dome light to make the lights come on when the doors open I don't know how to make the lights come on individually as map lights. Can someone shed some light!!!!

IIRC, the existing dome light has 3 electrical connections on it. One is ground (to the roof sheetmetal), then you have switched 12V from the doors relay then the third connection is always live 12V line.

If you wire your map lights off the live 12V line, you'll be able to turn them on at any time.

I want to be able to turn the lights on when they are off by pressing the light lense and also I want the lights to come on when the doors open. My understanding is that if I wire directly to the hot 12v the lights won't work when the doors open they will only work by pressing the lense. If I wire directly to the switched 12v then the lights won't come on by pressing the lense when they are off they will only work when the doors open. Am I missing something????

I guess that I don't have enough info about that particular light to tell you if you can do that or not. It depends on how they are designed. If each lamp uses SPDT switch then it would allow you do wire it the way you want it.

If each lamp uses SPST switch then you cannot directly wire them your way. But you could splice in 2 diodes per light and get it to work the way you want it. But that means you have to modify the lights.

Sorry that I misunderstood you.

Just a clarification (in case someone attempts this).

the 12V battery voltage is the common side. Ground is switched.

Thank you for swapping that peteski.

The 12V battery is the common, the switch on the OEM dome light has three positions: grounded (ON), open (OFF), and connected to a variable ground from the Door Lock Control module (DOOR).

Assuming that the variable ground from the DLC module is battery, etc., can very easily cost one $400+ for a new DLC...

See: https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=114667 for a very long thread troubleshooting a problem caused by a very short duration zap to that lead. It give all sorts of info.

Search for door lock control for more threads on this.

If you can provide a schematic for the fixture you are asking about, we might be able to give better answers...

Tomas
