front/rear speaker balance
I noticed on the xB that even though the fade setting on the stereo is set to 0, the sound is mostly coming from the front speakers. If you wanted an even sound distribution through the car, it seem you'd have to fade it almost totally to the rear speakers. and then the sound would be too faint anyway.
Has anyone else noticed this? (I do not own the optional sub-woofer, BTW)

okay, but when you go to a rock concert 100% speakers are located in the front, because it would be odd to have the sound of Norah Jones coming from behind you when you can see her in front of you... your dad's stereo was only stereo, two channels of sound, which is still the way the sound is recorded for CDs. Today if you taked your extremely hard earned cash down to a Bang&Olufsen outlet you can buy their top of the line audio system for a mere $25,000... and guess what - two speakers.
keep in mind that the speakers are for the four corners of the car... the soundstage is typically set up front, but the "rear fill" speakers are really for the rear passengers.

this is because in traditional setups the rear speakers produce more bass versus the xb as like he said they are fill speakers. just get nice replacement speakers and then get a deck that will allow you to tune what frequencies are sent to the rear speakers so that they are not trying to produce 40hz tones out of a what 5 and 1/4 inch speaker?.
If you want it to "thump" a sub is a must!
I have my stereo on: SSP "feel'
Bass: +2
Treb. + 2
Fade: -1
Volume- 30+
BTW make sure your SSP is set to "xB"- this can also make a BIG difference!!

yeah mine was set to xA and it sounded like all the sound was in front of the box, I changed it and then heard my rears in effect...
a sub is a must for decent sound though..

I know everyone harps on the stock subwoofer- But Im getting it anyways!! Im buying for ease of instalation- and the fact that ist the smallest sub available.

sorry, you're wrong.. my sub is MUCH smaller than the Bazookas... I replaced the compartment to the side of the spare.. I used an MTX 10" and an MTX 200watt amp... total out of pocket was under $200 including the $30 adapter from ebay...
I installed a Bazooka in my brother's xB and I definitely got the better bottom end... but he did pick his up used for like $60... total out of pocket was just over $100 for him...

I moved two days after getting this far, so I haven't gotten to finish the sub, but at least you get the idea from the pic... gimme another month and I will have it finished...
