GAS MILEAGE CHALLENGE!
LoL, the best I've gotten when the fuel light comes on was about 270 ... but when half tank I usually are at 150+, dunno how when the fuel light comes on it doesn't reach 300 :?: .... coz' my old crappy nissian santra does...
dun wait till the fuel light comes on to fill it up or wait till the light comes on to fill it up, ... which way is really the correct way? I've heard both and both sides have their own supporting theory.... or are they all just myths????

I ran 280 miles on a full tank, which is up from the 250 miles before my mods.
Funny thing is...when I was on empty, the needle buried in "E", I filled up and my tank over flowed when the pump hit 9 gallons???
Go figure that one, I couldn't.

I am amazed by these responses...the best I have been able to get is about 32 and that was before the cool air intake. Since I added the cai, it has dropped to 28.
Should I be using a differnt grade of fuel?

I traded in a 2001 Jeep Wrangler Sport to get the xA primarily for the mpgs. The first few tanks, I was getting 32, but as time has gone by... I've just gotten over 3000 miles, I've been pretty steady at 35mpg on my normal commute to Memphis. I typically get 320 miles before the fuel light starts blinking.
I checked the owners manual and the tank is 11.9 gallons. I haveyet to put more than 10 gallons in it when empty, so my guess is that you have 2 gallons of reserve once the light starts blinking, which is plenty of time to find a gas station and plenty of fuel to keep the fuel pump happy.
In my effort to increase the mpgs, I've purchased a couple of products. They aren't in yet, but I'll be sure to check in again after installing them.

How did your xB handle the mountain pass while it was loaded down with gear. I live near Oly too, and am making a trip to Sun Lakes this weekend and am curious as to how my xB will do. I'll be carrying a total of 3 people and camping gear. I hope I will be able to do at least the speed limit over Snoqualmie Pass.
BTW my record so far is 34MPG with intermitten use of A/C.
That is where we went...Sun lakes!!!! We go every year. We had me (I am three hundred lbs....hence the name 700lb Bench cuz thats what I bench, lol) my 80lb dog, my 7 month pregnant wife, and my 15 month old daughter, plus a bunch of odds and ends. The box did friggin great. Absolutely no problem at all.

In preperation for the trip I took the xB into the Scion of Olympia dealership to have her first oil change. They were kind enough to put the Mobil 1 I bought into the box. However, they looked at me like I was crazy when they saw it only had 2000 miles on it. They had an even funnier look when I told them it was supposed to be free. They claimed they didn't know what I was talking about and then come to find out that scion will only honor the free change at 5000 mile intervals. :?:
Back to the original topic:
The last two fill-ups at the gas station I had 315 miles on the odometer before the warning light came on.

I have 1600 miles on my 2004 Hot Lava XB, with 57% city and 43% hwy miles, I am averaging 33.82 mpg. I am surprised more are not getting over 30 mpg. I do drive it conservately though,-- no fast starts, looking to coast ahead to red lights, 55-60mph on the hwy. And I live in a flat town (Las Vegas) with lots of 45mph zones. TomSki

you cannot increase the efficiency of the engine by adding $20 items to the engine... your best bet is to try to increase aerodynamics... if a cheap piece of stamped tin was able to increase the gas mileage of your vehicle it would come standard on every car...
octane has absolutely no affect on gas mileage...
also, the gas tank most likely has a bladder inside of it that reduces the gas vapor... this is for emissions, but the side effect is that the bladder contracts and swells, so it is hard to know exactly your fuel capacity at any given time... but this contributes to the inaccuracy of the gas gauge and why fill ups rarely require over 10 gallons...

I have been averaging 32-33 mpg and I drive over Cajon Pass twice daily for work. I have an automatic and am amazed at the response it has in the mountains. I drive speeds between 70-80 mph. I am impressed considering I use the cheapest gas I can find.
A couple weeks ago I took a trip to NorCal, and filled up just before I entered the freeway and reset my trip meter...At the point I had to stop for my first fill up I noted I was getting somewhere between 36-39 MPG...I was on the 5 freeway at that point, halfway to Pittsburg, and driving steadily at 80mph...
On the regular streets around my house, I usually get somewhere between 32-34 MPG :D
My box is great on it's gas mileage :D

i haven't been able to get over 20mpg...i get 200miles to the tank 9-10 gallons...and 180 miles to the tank with the AC on...i have an 04 xB.....are there special emissions restrictions for my state (PA) that decrease my gas mileage? I also have 2 12" subs and 1000Watt amp....im assuming this could be the culprit?

Your gas millage will be low until the engine has over 3000 miles on it.
Something about a "wear in" period for the engine.
I noticed the same thing with my xB and my friends xB.
However, we changed the oil at 1000 miles and noticed the gas millage improve slightly. Then at 3000 miles, it was a consistant 29 to 30 MPG.
