Default Help w/Fan Belt Noise and Replacement Instructions

My XB belts are squeaking again. Had them replaced by dealer under warranty - and now after 15,000 more miles they are squaeking again. Not all the time - just when sitting at a light idling - if put in neutral and rev the engine - after 4 or 5 seconds of shreeking it goes back to normal.
I tried belt dressing - helps for only a couple of days. Anyone else with this problem?
I checked fluids - belt look tight - seems fine - definately belt noise.

I would like to change them myself - looks pretty tight in there. Anyone have detailed instructions - I did a search w/no luck. Thanks.

Looks? Seems? Quite the diagnosis there. Hey, I got this pain in my back...... Ehh, just messin wit ya.

Press on it halfway between the pulley's. How much does it move? Any more than about 1/2in. and it's too loose. They do stretch, so it's not unreasonable. And if you are hearing a screeching noise, then I'd bet that's all it is.

In my experience, bad belts chirp, loose belts scream.

Yeah, just tighten them up or have the dealer that put them on readjust them before they get burned up from slipping.
It's kinda funny tho cause I've got 34K on my original belts and have never had to readjust them since new.

The instructions are in the Service Manual here in SL, Section 14-5. But they just deal with the replacement, not the access. I think for access it helps to remove the wheel and bumper.

I think i can help here, as i have replaced 5 belts now on 2 boxes. First off, its not a fan belt, as the fans are electrical.y controlled.

There are 2 bolts that hold the alternator in place. One at the top ( 12 MM i believe ) and one that sits directly under the alt. ( 14 MM i believe ). the one on the top is easy to loosen. The one on the bottom is a little more hard to get loose.

Me personally i have had to remove the front passenger side wheel on both cars .. use a 3/8s inch rachet and about 2 feet worth of extentions with the socket on the bottom bolt. I then had to plant my butt on the ground and forcively push on the rachet and with my left foot to get it to break. Once loose, the alt. will fall back allowing the belt to be adjusted. Using a pry bar push the alt all the way forward and tighten the top bolt. Once tight, then move to the bolt on the bottom and make sure its tight too. That should take care of your noisey belt issues.

BTW .... my GFs car i replaced the original belt with one from PepBoys which worked for a few months. I have since replaced it again with a stock belt from Toyota. That worked for a few months, but yet again it was making noise. So i went in and tightened it and now she is squeek free. Course, now mine is making the squealing noise .... LOL

i had a honda once, and the compressor was bad and squeeked big time. at idle, when driving, when i turn it off it squawks at me. i couldn't take it, and i wasn't gonna pay $1500 to fix it, so i scrapped it.
