Exclamation Issues with key

Hello everyone!

Okay so...I managed to bend my key to my 2005 Scion xB. Please don't ask how I already beat myself up for managing to do it. Anyways I managed to bend it back enough so it would unlock the doors and run the car. I'm afraid it may be a weaker key due to this accident(or if I bend it again / or something else happens then it snaps). I only have the one key for my scion. I went to a couple hardware stores and they said its a dealer only key...meaning I can only get it from the dealer. I went to the Scion dealership here in town but the parts area closed at 5pm. My question(s) is the damaged key safe to use? How much will a replacement key cost? Can I buy a key off the internet and have it cut? Does the 2005 scion xb key have a transponder/chip in it? Why can't a hardware store cut it?

Any help is awesome!

Thanks Lance

There's no transponder in the key. I don't see why any hardware store or Home Depot couldn't just cut you a new one.

I'd try a larger place like Home Depot or Lowes. To the best of my knowledge, there's nothing special about it.

If its the key with the remote to unlock the doors, they will refuse to cut it. They just did the same thing with me, saying it was a "transponder", even after I explained it was a simple lock/unlock feature, but they still refused.

I had to go to walmart when one employee was there, buy a blank and convince them to cut mine instead.

its just a key, no remote unlock...the key-less entry is a separate electronic device.

WTH!!!??They wont cut that lame. The dealership gives you a tag with a number on it that you get when you buy the car give them that number and you should have got two keys with the car.If you do not have that number you can give them your info to prove it is your car and the dealer can look it up and cut you a new as well.

I just bought a used xB that only came with one plain metal key. I went to the dealer and got a brand new key with the Scion logo on it for something like $7. There is nothing special about our keys.

Step 1. Drive to local Scion dealer
Step 2. Write down VIN on a piece of paper
Step 3. go into dealership with registration and ID
Step 4. Go to parts guy, tell him you need a key cut for that vin
Step 5. Pay for said key
Step 6. Go home

Why are so many people scared to go to dealerships? They make life SOOOO much easier

Yes I work at a PostalAnnex, if you would like I could give you the key type! I work on Monday and I can see what type of key it is. I have made a copy of my key and it works perfect. No transponder needed.

If I remember correctly the gen 1 Scion xB key is a TR-47. I am 95% sure but I will double check on Monday. Here are some links to the original poster: http://wedo.hillmangroup.com/item/ke...79&prodid=1881

Go to a local locksmith and tell them that key name and you should get some results. If you want I could mail you a blank of the key and then you could take it to a locksmith to get it cut. One disclaimer: Curved keys will be very difficult to copy correctly with my key cutting experience. Let me know!

Try having one made that's broken in half.

Way back when in a car long gone, we went by the local big box store and got my then 2yo daughter a new playset. The only big box store that had the one we wanted was 35 miles away. No big deal.
The box this thing came in wouldn't fit in the car (it was a station wagon), so we put it up on the roof rack. We needed tie downs, so I bought some. We needed to cut the tie downs out of the package. I spent $180 on the playset and $15 on tie-downs, but was too cheap to go back in and buy a utility knife or scissors for $2, so I used the key to the car like a serrated edge. It got through one (out of 8 ) zip tie, then broke.
Did I mention we were in the fire lane?
At the extreme other end of the shopping center we were in was an Ace type hardware store. I hoofed it over there and talked them into trying to make a new one-piece key out of my uber custom two-piece one. Luckily their key machine was the type where the OG key is clamped into the machine horizontally. Also luckily (hehe), the break was clean and the key wasn't bent.
It worked fine.
