Default Locked and warming up???

Is there a way to lock the car while you have it running? I hate to leave my car unlocked while it is running and I am not right near it. If there is another thread, sorry, I searched and did not find.

use a spare key? but why would you want to leave your car running when you're not around?

there are two ways of doing this.

1: remote starter
2: you are gonna need a spare key to make this work....start the car, get out, close the door, go to the passenger door, open it, press the lock button, close that door.

now with #2, if you don't have a second key, you just f'ed yourself

I tried locking it from the drivers side dor and from the remote keyless entry. I'll have to go make myshelf a second key and use the passengerside. Thanks.

ahh, i see. my remote is always with my key anyway. so can you just do what dghotlava said and press unlock when you're ready to go or does that not work. maybe you won't need to make that second key.

i believe the key fob(remote) gets deactivated once the car is started....you need the key.

why not test it ...roll down the windows and try it out....

why not just get a remote starter???

those are safety features so you don't lock your keys in the car....

Because I am too much of a cheap ___ to get it done and to lazy to do it myself.

I keep my regular car keys separate from the set with my house etc. On my house key set I keep only the key, not the remote to unlock the doors. When the engine is running you can use the key to lock your driver's door and all the doors will lock.

I use my spare...keep it in my wallet, to lock the doors after I start it up. Its been about 5 degrees in the morning lalty, so no way in hell im getting in without it heated up.

Otherwise, you can get a remote starter for about $130

Be careful with remote starters...
On a cold late night (11:30 or so) in Melrose, MA. I decided to use the remote start just before I headed out the door. After getting to the car, I unlocked the door, put the key in and turned it to the 'on' position, and as I let the car warm up, I decided to check out my awesome install job on my strut tower brace that I had put on earlier that day ( I was feeling proud of it, I guess). I popped the hood release, closed the door and headed for the hood.
As I opened the hood, I heard the door click locked!!! I locked myself out with the engine running because of the mercury switch for the alarm on the hood! If that wasn't bad enough, I had the housekey AND my cellphone in the car as well! After waking up my landlord to let me in (he lived downstairs), I called my wife and told her that she needed to find another way home. She got home with the spare keys 1 1/2 hours later...Sheesh! I had no idea the alarm would do that! Lesson learned though!!!

Just be careful and make sure you have a spare you can get to!

Heres a different idea. Buy an aftermarket keyless entry, have them either not connect or put a toggle on the wire that hooks to the ignition, buy a quick release key ring, and leave the car running with the key in , quick release the remote for the keyless entry , shut the door, and lock the door, as long as the ignition wire is toggled off or not hooked up the doors will lock and unlock freely with the click of a button. The purpose of the toggle is to be able to have a switched wire hooked up to the keyless brain, so you can enter programming mode and when you start the car with the ignition toggled on the door locks will lock and unlock when turned off , for safety percautions. Or the spare key always works. Good luck
