Default NE1 else get worse mileage on the freeway, than in town?

I average between 26-28mpg running around town. I've never gotten anywhere close to the rated mpg. The best mileage that I've gotten has been just over 30mpg. I did my first road trip a couple of weeks ago. I was averaging about 75mph going to Atlanta. I ran out of gas at 289 miles into the trip. No fun walking to the gas station in the rain at night. I got 25.5mpg and was in shock. I averaged around 70mph on the way home and got 26.5mpg. I took it to the dealer and had them check it. They said everything was fine and all setting were correct. Now that I got it back, on the last 2 tanks I've gotten 23.5mpg. This sucks. I got 23mpg on the road in my Mercedes. The biggest reason that I got this car over a Dodge Magnum was because of the mileage it was rated at.
So it made me wonder if anyone else had the same problem and gets worse mileage?

By the way I drive conservatively, don't have a heavy foot,(unless I'm in my El Camino) and have an automatic XB.

Also how come so many people have read the forum but very few people actually took the poll? Come on go click on your answer.

After 70 mph, the gas mileage is going to suffer big time. You need to slow it down. There's a big difference between a xb and a dodge magnum; I think you choose the wrong car for your needs.

When do you generally shift? If you shift above 3krpm your milage is going to go down to crap.

From the sound of it, you have a heavy foot which would explain why your MPG isn't that great. On the interstate i drive 70mph on average, sometimes below but rarely cruise above 70mph. Point being, even with my mods i'm still getting roughly 29-30mpg on interstate.

We have a small tank as well, take that in consideration..

Good luck with your, problem? Cya

I average about 25mpg with city and highway driving combined with occasional spirited driving. Lots of ppl don't take into account that going faster will decrease your gas mileage by quite a bit because of drag. If you double your speed, your drag is 4 times more. 50-60 mph is the best for gas mileage.

I drive 250 per week and averaging 31.7, with high of 33.9 and low of 29.3. Most of my driving is freeway @ 70 mph!

I recently got 34 mpg in town, then filled up that day and drove 200 miles on the highway at 70 mph and got 33 mpg. The low gearing means you have to keep the speed below 65 or 70 or else the engine is simply running too fast to be fuel efficient.

I believe the car is designed to be a city commuter car, which is what I bought it for. It's wonderful to be in high gear at 35 mph. It would be nice to have a 6th gear, but the engine may not have enough torque to economically push the box through the air at high speed with lower rpms.

I'll admit that it's a little discouraging to hear of people with 230 HP Buicks getting 30 mpg on the road, but I also know they're not doing so well in town driving. Hey, even a 400 HP Corvette is rated at 28 mpg highway, but I don't buy a $50k Vette to get good gas mileage, and I don't buy a $15k Box to do 186, either.

JUST took a 2341 mile road trip. And I noticed, that the slower I went, the better the MPG. I had three adults in the car, with luggage. I run on 16 inch KROM wheels; lowered on TRD springs as well. Five speed. AND! I think this made the big difference: CRUISE CONTROL, locked on the speed limit 99% of the time.
I averaged about 36 MPG for the trip. Yes, 36 MPG. The worse mileage was 29 while driving a period of 70 MPH in FLORIDA.

It's a brick, on wheels, yet, it does alright for me.

Another thing I noticed, is that if you follow the speed limit, you get there at the same time. And more relaxed, not having to worry about the Fuzz.

You are right. The little engine is working really hard 70+. I get better mpg in town (31-34), but thats because im running 75-80 on the hwy.

once that VVT kicks in...it beats the hell out of ur gas mileage...it just makes sense...more horsepower you are producing, the more gas you burn, the less mileage you get...VVT I think kicks in right around 4K...and 5th gear at 4K is exactly 80MPH (in a 5 speed) at first it baffled me, but then I realized where the VVT kicks in, so I slowed it down, and bingo 33MPG on the highway, and about 30 in town...u just have to keep it at 75mph and under n u'll be alllll gravy...I will admit, I was slightly dissapointed when I realized I couldn't cruise at 80 and get those beautiful mileage figures, but I adapted and when I layed my head down that night, I dreamt of 6 speeds and taller gears!
