Default New Owner, a couple of questions and a thanks

Good day,

Just bought my new `06 BOP Manual xB on 06-05-06, and wanted to say thanks for so much of the great information available here.

Now, for a couple of questions or requests for opinions:

1) Extended Warranty: I purchased the 7 year coverage, but if I understand correctly it only extends the factory 3 year bumper to bumper coverage to 7 years, so it is really a 4 year extension for 1300. What is the general opinion here on these, are they worth it? If it isn't purchased, will Toyota or the dealer contact me prior to the expiration on the factory coverage to purchase an extension? Basically I am trying to decide if I should go ahead and cancel that policy, since I did buy the scion for the Toyota build quality and plan on doing numerous upgrades/installations that I don't doubt will get me hassles from a dealership anyways.

2) Scratches from the factory. When I took delivery, I identified 3 areas with scratches or pits in the paint. I was told to bring the vehicle back to have them buffed out, but I am wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem and how difficult they are to remove. For reference, the marks are on the front passenger side door, on the roof in the rear passenger side corner, and the pits/chips are 2 about an inch apart in the middle of the driver's side rear door. I am hoping they can be removed without any problem.

If it makes any difference, the dealer was Lander's Scion in Little Rock, Arkansas, and my salesman was Jason Whitlock.

Thank you for any information or assistance you are able to provide, and I look forward to becoming a part of this community, which was a strong reason for my purchase!

John

I got the warrantey also. Unless the dealership can prove a mod caused the problem you will be ok. I had some scratches when I picked mine up and the dealership fixed them with no problems.

First of all congradulations on your purchase!

1) Yes I am a dealer, and I always buy extended warranties on the cars I purchase. Toyta does have great reliability but no car is 100% and the extended warranty will cover a little more than the factory warranty. If you plan on keeping your vehicle the full seven years than I would say you should absolutly purchse it, I don't know anyone who has owned a car for more than five that can say they didn't have some problem. After the three years are up you will get offers to extended it but it will not be through the dealership or Toyota it will be from other companies and the price will be a lot higher. I would keep the 7 year as long as you will keep it that long and won't hit the milage limit before then. I would change it if you trade your cars sooner or if you will hit the milage limit sooner.

2) Let the dealership handle it. Its not uncommon for a car to come in with scratches and they are usually easy to buff out.

ya, i had the extended warranty too. If there is no problem with the car after 7 yrs you get back the $ anyway. So i would highly suggest to keep the extended warranty..peace in mind

Hmm, I will have to ask about this. Are you sure this is the case with all dealers?

Thank you for all the great replies. Got my 'stock' photos taken today, and just now debadged it. I am debating what my first mod will be, but I am leaning towards sound deadening or lowering springs. No doubt I will have questions on those topics soon enoough (after, of course, the thorough use of the search function (; )

Oh, and another question: Car Covers. Do any of you use one, and if so any suggestions on quality brands or locations to purchase from?

I would love to live in such a fantasy land, where you get your money back on insurance policies if you never make a claim. Unfortunately, here in the cold hard world of Real Life, when the coverage ends the deal is over.

Insurance (and extended warranties are simply a form of insurance) is gambling. You bet that something expensive will go wrong. The insurance company bets that it won't.

The odds are with them. That's how they stay profitable.

My dealer offered me 3 added years of the same bumper-to-bumper coverage that Toyota gives us with a new xB for $600 with a $50 deductable or $700 with no deductable. Call me cheap - I took the $600 coverage.

I know some dealers offer some money back, when my family purchased a jeep in 98, they had a 50% back offer if the warrantee was never used.

Will have to contact my dealer regarding their policy.

I'm sure there are third-party insurers who might offer a "some of your money back" deal as an incentive. I'm sure the way they pay for it is by carefully writing the warranty to exclude things that commonly go wrong or are expensive to fix, and by jacking up the price.

There's no money back on a Toyota extended warranty. I hope you haven't been telling people there is without actually checking your facts.

There is no way they would give you your money back if you never used it.....Thats how they make extra margin is from the warrantys....i purchased the warranty fr the sole purpose that my monthly payment went up $25 bucks and also its fully 100% refundable within the first 3 years b4 the factory one is over.....

As far as the scratches go. There should be NONE on it. If there were some on it, good luck on them not making the repairs look worse. The paint on these things are horrible (read very soft and easily scratched). Be careful on who makes the repair! It could end up being a can of worms. Good luck!!

I agree, Jethro, I don't usually buy extended warranties on ANYTHING. I did it this time for two reasons:
1) While the Toyota parts are considered VERY dependable, the computers that run all vehicles nowadys CAN have problems on any car and can be very expensive to replace. $600 seemed like reasonable enough insurance to help with one of those disabling catastrophies. I would probably have balked at much more than that, especially a thousand or more.

2) The wife was not really on board with getting rid of the Wrangler for the xB and likes extended extended warranties despite my misgivings. Buying the warranty placated her a little bit. THAT was $600 well spent, if ya' know what I mean.

I understand your reasons Big Kill, and am glad you have that extra piece of mind. Sometimes you have to do what you need to do to make something happen. I hear ya on that for sure. LOL
