YEah, I hear ya. This car was just a replacement for my Echo daily driver. I might change a few things, just to personalize it a little...

Man, did I think the same thing too... until I realized how much money I had left over after reviewing my car budget.

What a shame... I really do need a new fridge

Yep. I hear you. I'm not going to do a great deal to mine either. Seems a little silly when you buy a car for $14,000 to spend another $3000 on stuff that's alleged to make it faster (but won't really) or neon lights and stripes and wings to make it look unique (its already one of the most unique things on the road)

My mods are limited to my TRD short shift (had to have it) and a CAI I got for free. I'll get some lighter alloy wheels and tint the windows darker for the Arizona sun and that may be it.

That's why so many people end up having multiple cars. The utilitarian car, the sporty car, the luxury car, the Ford F-250 Super Duty you use to trailer your race car...

Hey, I bought the xB as a beater and I modded it the minute it rolled out of the parking lot, but like justinb says, it's a great car as it is. I could have been happy with the MP3 player, but I wanted GPS. I could have went without a sunroof, but it's a luxury I can't live without...

For the base price of about $14K with no options, you can add the sunroof and wheels and still be under $16K. That's still not a bad price to pay for everything that you get. My sister paid about $19K for Civic Hybrid (with CVT)... cloth interior, no sunroof, no tinted windows, no MP3, no VSC, no traction control... but the engine does turn off when you stop at a red light.

Your not as alone as you think, there are a lot of stock xBs out there, most of the owners just aren't on the site, you have to remember this is an enthusiast site, most of us are obsessed with our cars,

On that note, my car is basically stock I have the CAI cause I won it, and I did add the oem alloy 7 spoke wheels when I ordered it.

I've had it since July 2004 and haven't done much else to it. Of cours in my case what is holding me back is Budget, its a great car and I love it like it is but there are a few things I would do to personalize it if I had the budget

The noise : power ratio from modifying the box doesn't work out for me.

I don't know... I really think the 240 may have cured me of the mod bug. I find it relaxing to have a car that I can leave alone.

Over the course of my ownership of my last car, it probably cost me over $12k in mods... I don't have a concrete number because I keep getting depressed when I try to add up receipts in the overflowing shoebox... and it's still not done. I don't know if I'm ready for mroe of that stress.

Here's an anti-modding opinion piece from edmunds.com:

Thanks. I agree with a lot of his points. If I had to drive the civic for considerable distances on the highway, I would rip the exhaust off and go with a stock setup again.

The farty drone does not come with a significant enough gain to justify it.... but I have been pleased with just about every mod to my nissan.

Don't believe all the hype. Most of the Scions where I live are unmodified. Others have alloy rims but are otherwise stock. I don't know that the ratios are that much higher than on any other car, really. It's just a difference in the way mods are done with a Scion. With most cars you spend a few grand for the "sports package" or whatever to get the alloy wheels and spoiler. In the end it looks just like 1000 other cars with the same sports package. With the scions it's all ala-carte and there's a greater variety of options so you notice all the little differences.

I have seat covers and alloys with no real plans to do any other cosmetic mods. I only got the wheels because one of my stock tires was damaged and the wheel covers were scratched up bad. I figured instead of $130 for one new tire I'd rather spend $400 and get a full set of barely used rims and tires. I may add some sound deadening and more interior lights but that's for my own enjoyment rather than to make it look cool.

You were wise to not get a bunch of mods when you bought the car, since you can add them later anyway and if you do a little digging you can find them cheaper.

Mod bug is bad I've never had a vehicle that I haven't modified and while it's fun it kind of sucks. With my Scion I didn't even pick it up from the dealership before I had a color change done. I say good for you for not modding, it's a disease. HAHA

I originally planned to keep my xb stock but then I added a bsp grill and well, I got a whole list of stuff I want to do, but I dunno if I will ever get it done. I was never much into cars but I like to be original and different, so the xb is perfect for me.

I disagree in part with the premise of the article.
"Performance" junkies and mod-a-holics may be at the heart of what he's talking about. But I do not believe bone stock is always best. People have different tastes, styles, and plans with their cars. I'll agree its somewhat silly to spend thousands trying to transform a car into something its not. However, i don't see modding the xB as trying to accomplish that.
For me, modding the xB is correcting certain... "deficiencies" that were inherent in the vehicle...
for me primarily... body roll, rough ride, lack of power (auto).
if you have a problem in mind and fixing it will take your car to the next level (good to better) then modding is absolutely in order.

why not just buy a stock car that has everything you want? that's just a silly question... there must first be the assumption that such a car exists.

Hey, I was just sort of ribbing you. You know, 'more power to you...and here is how you get that more power to you' sort of thing.

I really do think, you want to keep it stock, great. My Box, is stock..in a way. With the exception of the ENKI wheels not being bought through TOYOTA (it is a brand they sell, but I did not get them through them), and the tint job on the front windows, all of my SCION is gear I got from, well, SCION.

And I'm not done yet. To be honest, I won't win awards with it, since none of the stuff I have done is after market. As to why I did not get the Box 'fully loaded' is I did not have the $$ at the time, since I bought my Box with cash.

When I get $$, I do stuff to the Box, that I want to do. And since it's all SCION installed, it's covered by warranty. No messing with that.

And, this is the most important bit, I am happy with my Box the way I am doing it. It's more of a sleeper, this way.

And you should be happy with your Box as well. That is key.

I agree. I think they're talking about the excessive tuners. Sure, I wouldn't mind a stronger clutch, but my stock one works. When my clutch dies and I need a new one, I'll probably replace it with the TRD one, but until then... it works. My mods were for simple pleasure. I had a $50 gift certificate, so I bought the TRD short shifter... in my opinion, it makes my driving experience a better one. I bought an armrest/console because it didn't have one... and that is something that I've just grown used to. It seems like the car came with it, but it's just odd when you get in a Scion without an armrest...

I don't have 300hp, but obviously I don't care about having 300hp or else I would have bought a Mustang GT or a 350Z. That's why I'm not going to install a supercharger, nitrous, upgraded fuel system, etc... it's a great car for the money and it's economical! Why ruin the fuel economy when it's one of the car's greatest strengths? While gas prices keep going up and your friends are _____ing about how their turbocharged RX8s suck up premium gas, you can just laugh.

It doesn't really matter whether you mod your car or not, as long as you enjoy it. When people modify their cars, they should be doing it for themselves, not to please people at a car show... at least that's the way I look at it.

Of course, there are a few pointless carbon fiber appliques and hood struts that I got because I just thought they were cool. Hahaha.

Yes, yes. Agreed.
I got the cup holder lights, which I used to think, is the dumbest thing I haver ever done to a car.

Yet, now that I have them in the Box, but not yet in the xA, I miss having them in the xA.

You know why? 'Cause at night, you can't see the ding dong cup holders in the xA, it's so dark down there...You can't see where to put the soda.

So maybe not all of the mods are that dumb after all...
