Just thought I'd give the link to the update for my max MPG this last tank of gas.....

https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...r=asc&&start=0

At first I thought I'd compare before and after snorkel removal, but I decided just to go all out for max MPG so driving habits were definetly modified so I changed more varibles than just the snorkel.

Default Another way to skin a cat...

Hi Guys,

I decided to take the 'plunge' and do the mod. Went out to the parking lot during a coffee break with screwdrivers in hand and... well found out that it was a bolt holding the end on instead of a screw. So I said Hey... I know what I will do, I will just leave the bolt end on and detach the end that goes into the filter box (you know just stuff the loose end over to the side) and wah lah. I dont know what happended Toyota-service department people, must have been the earlier unfortunate incident with the possum 'blink-blink-nudge-nudge' and not the Scionist in me.

While clearing my corners this weekend I decided to remove my snorkel while the front end was apart and was surprised at how poor of a design it was (aerodynamically speaking). I've driven about 100miles so far and the engine feels a little better in the mid range, but it feels like it's choking sometimes. In my opinion, without an air horn at the front of the inlet, the air is rushing in too fast and creating too much turbulence.

The next step is to create a nice smooth inlet pipe with an air horn and bring it up closer to the front bumper. And I couldn't beleive my '06 had that secondary charcoal/carbon? filter in the upper intake. That thing has to go. With a new inlet pipe, K&N drop-in filter, & no carbon filter, there should be a nice increase in airlfow.

I noticed the same thing. My car seems to lose power above 5K. Like you said, as if it's starving.
Also, where is the charcoal filter located? I have an 06 also.

I also have an 06', did the mod this weekend and have noticed all the same things the above guys wrote. I also think too much air and bad turbulence is the problem.

I just thought of an idea for the inlet. I know it's not what I've seen on other cars, but how about one of those molded ports for a subwoofer enclosure. Like this:

Obviously modified to fit cleanly.

Default Well there's the problem... :-)

Well there's the problem... Feels sluggish above 5k? Poor gas mileage? I dont think mine has EVER seen 5k rpm's and I have an auto with that goofy hold it in a lower gear till it warms up. I would'nt know if mine felt sluggish or not. Course all of you realize I am playing, so dont flame me. But serioulsy, keeping your foot out of it will do wonders in the MPG arena.

Hmm...strange, I'm not getting that at all. In fact, it feels better throughout the entire rev range, and seems to cruise much easier at the top (70-80mph) end.
Are you guys maybe running automatics? Mine's a stick, and I'd be curious to see if that makes a difference.

Just a quick question: Have you guys who have ripped the snorkel off pulled the EFI fuse so the ECU will re-learn it's job?

I just removed my snorkle and did the mod that Heathen recommended . . . very, very easy to do. Very easy to do and clean looking as well.

I'm wondering - being that we're getting 3-5+mpg better without having pulled the fuse - just how necessary that step is???

That step isn't probably that necessary - the ECU will eventually re-train itself even if you don't do that. That just makes the retraining quicker as it doesn't have to override what it already learned before the change(s).
