Default Toyota exec insults Scion's clientele

Not sure exactly where to post this. Mods, feel free to move/repost.

I don't find this funny at all, and I have excellent credit. Amazing that an executive would actually say this out loud.

From Brandweek:

Bill Burris, Toyota’s advertising manager, said other Toyota brands aren’t necessarily stealing Scion’s customers. “It’s a danger here but we have a handshake agreement not to fish in each other’s pond,” said Burris. “I have joke I like, and it’s the difference between a Corolla buyer and a Scion buyer is that the Corolla buyer has a better FICO [credit rating] score.”

The article was more about Scion's sales slipping due to increased competition in the target demo, and the idea was presented that Toyota was competing with itself. Very insightful until this guy shared a joke with the world.

Bad idea on his part! Toyota better find a solution to this before they lose Scion customers!

Toyota, while seeing a surge in market share is having issues globally as their quality has been declining. The Japanese government had to step in there and the new xB is having major issues.

I've got my xB and it will be my only toyota.

My score was 790 when I bought my tC. . . and I'd never ever ever buy a Toyota, due to Toyota Motor Corp. unwillingness to CONTROL their dealers and stop them from stupid bait and switch sales tactics. They've done this to me more time than I can count. I don't care if Toyota's are the best products. . . I'd sooner buy a Hyundai (but I'd probably just get a Honda).

Now with Scion, the dealers are smart enough not to say typical slimy dealer slime. Lexus dealers? You can tell that corporate has set up strict rules. Yes, there are a few exceptions, but they are an EXTREME minority.

im surprised he said that publicly. that wont stop me from buying a lexus... if you dont know already, execs talk crap about customers ALL the time. "lets put an engine start button in this car - these idiots will surely buy it". if that doesn't come out of someones mouth in toyota's buildings or if it doesnt run through their mind secretly, then they're not human. im sure if you work with customers, you've done that before yourself. if you can pay your car in full or have excellent credit then he wasnt talking about you. cry babies on this website... big whoop.

Reminds of when my wife and went to look at Lexus's they treated us terribly told us we should come back if we weren't' buying right away..well we weren't sure since we had not driven anything yet....well we left since we were not valued and bought a Volvo S60T that day ...another misjudgment of possible clients.... I have bought 3 cars since then and no Lexus's

As someone with perfect credit (that could have bought a more expensive car) I am NOT offended.

It may have been something that he should have kept to himself, but he's the one who deals with the numbers and statistics every day. I'm sure his first hand experience with Scion/Toyota is more accurate than any Scionlife member's best guess.

Just look at who Scion markets to. Look at the ads filled with hip-hop music and baggy pants. They brag about having the youngest average owners...

Now look at Toyota's target demo. The small family, the college grads, ect. The average Corolla buyer probably does have a better credit score than the young kid who wants to go street race in a tC.

Slip of the tounge on his part? Yes. Offensive? Not really.

well the dealers around here are at war with each other, and one grouping of dealers, who I will leave nameless, is pretty bad about refusing to even talk to you except to get your social so they can run your credit score, if its good enough then they'll talk and let you test drive, if not, they just basicly tell you to go away

oh and its a toyota/scion dealer and even the scion guys do it

i would say dont take this too heavily people. im sure the company does not support his own personal opinions. nothing you can do about personal opinions.

what if all day long people come in with no cash and horrible credit trying to buy the "prekitted" TC or XB to look cool and everyone that comes in for corollas are not looking for a fashion statement car and have plenty of money and good credit.

still a dumb thing to say and he is most likely paying for it from his bosses.
