Wow.. your dad is pretty misogy... um... old fashioned huh?

Well as long as you enjoy your xA, that's what's important!

I just don't get why manufacturers do this...? maybe they're afraid the xB will do absolutely nothing if you step on the gas pedal when cruising at 65mph in a taller 5th or new 6th gear.
IMO, the reason for it is that this car and the powertrain were designed for the AUTOMATIC. At normal freeway speeds, the auto is just cruising along. There was no stick option on the bB. When I bought my Echo, when they first came out, you couldn't get it in a stick. I think they tried to gear it differently than the Echo to give it more pep around town and at lower speeds, but I think they had to guesstimate on the right gearing. It's not easy to cover every point on the speedo, so they gotta pick the spots where it seems the most important. Even at the RPMs it's turning at freeway speeds in the stick, it's still being efficient and that's it's main objective. I don't think a 6th gear would help much. It wouldn't have hardly any pull, you'd constantly be pulling out of it to accel.

And yes, they are afraid there won't be any punch and people will complain about that as well. You can't please everyone...

I'd never get an automatic anything, but it'll be something both my wife and I drive.

God I hate automatics.

My wife and I were initially stuck on getting an automatic, but after driving the manual, it just seemed that the manual added more "fun factor". Most pros who have road tested the xB say you utilize the power range of the 108 horsies better with the manual. We're lovin' it!

I got a stick...and I use it 5-6 days a week delivering pizzas, all stop and go,and wouldnt change it. I do have an auto "backup" car but after about 10 minutes in that thing I'm bored. I guess I could be like most of you people who picked autos on here, talk on my phone, eat, fondle my girl...etc. but that defeats the whole purpose of driving, actually paying attention to the road. People who pick an auto so they can "multi-task" shouldn't be allowed to drive in the first place.

Manual is definately the way to go. My S-10 has a B&M short shift kit in it, can't wait to get a kit for my xB.

i suggest the TRD sport shift. the price and the ease of installation ( 20 Minutes or less) and its worth it. it comes with a nice TRD ball shift **** too
