Windshield cracking, common problem?
Hey whats going on everyone, anyhow, Im in the market for a 1gen Xb, but everyone tells me dont buy it that the windshield constantly cracks, even if its just parked, especially the 06's. How common is it? Is there an aftermarket fix for it? Im looking for daily driver and I do about 75mile commute to work, so its bound to get a pebble or 2 eventually. Thanks for your time.
It's a car, if you drive it, things will happen. My first windshield lasted three years before I punched it and cracked it. I had lots of pin sized chips and few quarter sized ones. These windshields are at an extreme angle, things are going to happen. If you're scared, don't get one.
Eh, I've had mine for almost 3 years and I have one little crack from a rock. It's only about and inch long. I had Safelite patch it so it wouldn't spread. This happened almost two years ago.
Alright good to hear, thanks alot for the quick replies guys. I just needed to hear it from actual owners, instead of 3rd party, coming from the DSM world I know how 3rd party people, if they read about one problem, like to exaggerate.
I had mine crack while it was sitting over night. Is was a stress crack and the dealer took care of it under warranty. That was two years ago and the replacement has held up much better than the original.
my 06 box had a cracked windshield for over a year before i fixed it, it never spread or anything, when you have a piece of glass at about a 70* angle, things are gonna hit it, its gonna crack eventually. just get glass coverage and youll be good, one free replacement a year :-)
i guess different threads have different outcomes. if you do some searching you will find threads where the majority hate the windshield issue and are fed up with it from having so many windshields crack. even trying to make lawsuits against toyota.
why in this windshield thread is everyone saying it's not so bad and others everyone is ready to mail a flaming bag of dog poo to toyota about how often the windshields break?

Same here, I had mine for over 3 years, it's an 06 as well. Then one day, some projectile hit the top center, cracked it all the way down. I was driving through a neighborhood under some trees, never saw what it was that hit it. Just saw a blur, and couldn't find the object after pulling over and searching.
Good news is in Florida, zero deductible for windshield replacement. Safelite replaced it at my house the next day. The new one was a perfect replacement for the old. Took less than 30 minutes and did not cost a penny.
To be honest, I've had something odd happen to windshields and windows out of all 3 cars I've owned. Stuff happens.

Im no my 5th. Here is what i can tell you.
because of the curviture on the right and left side, it makes the windshield more saceptable to cracking cause its under pressure. I was told this a couple years back when i had Safelite replace my glass with one of their own. They replaced it with a PPG and there was no more problems.
Course, after a year of driving here in the NorthEast the windshield needs to be replaced any way cause it ends up being sand blasted. Mine is covered under my insurance. If not, then it would run $300 for the glass, gasket and labor. Safelight doesnt always replace the gasket. Make sure you remind them to replace and not reuse, even if you have to pay the $35 for the gasket. Otherwise your new glass will leak. Then your down another day for the repair that should have been done right the first time.
Replacing the glass is cheaper now then it was 4 years ago. Back then it was almost $600!
