Things you can't tell by sitting in, looking at or driving them:
xB has standard traction control and electronic stability control.
xA - TRAC is optional and ESC is not available.
xA - optional side curtain airbags.
xB - not available.
If buying used, check the options on an xA for these things since (I'm fairly certain) they can't be retrofitted.

this is the difference to me.
in 10-15 years, people going to look at the xb like they do the old vw vans. cool, kitchy, unique, love it or hate it styling. no one cares about the vw van's power or mpg or handling. it's the oddity of the thing, it's utilitarian, and it's fun to drive because of that reason.
in 10-15 years people are going to look at the xa like they do the echo, or the corolla, or most every other econo box nowadays. sure it's much better looking than alot of them now. but it's not going to age well compared to something like the mini, or the xb, or the beetle, imo.

10-15 years from now we might look back at the xA and see a cool little dependable car. We might look back at the xB and say, "what the heck was I thinking?!".
The xA is definately more of a mainstream car while the xB is more of a "love it or hate it" design. We just happen to love it. I wouldn't want to part with either car.
