Well first off, good thing for warranty. Second, when you say "borken", do you mean physically damaged into pieces or simply malfunction. The 1NZ-FE does have a CEL that requires the replacement of the timing gear on the intake camshaft due to a malfunction in the gear, other than the VVT-i not working, the vehicle still drives normally.

The Check Engine Light ("CEL") will be on, thats how you know it went bad. When I say the vehicle drives normal, I mean it will drive like a 1.5L without VVT-i.

There was a TSB but I think it applied to earlier years about the cam and/or timing anybody remember?

my 04 has about 96k on it and my cel is on but i'm fairly sure based on the codes its because the cat is going bad, is this timing gear something i should look into?
