xB windshield problems?!?!?!?!

B.S.!! mabey at FORD does safety come last. Toyota and Honda both have extensize testing facilities. One test they both do is a low speed crash against pedestrains.....
I could go on, but for you to say "safty first" it usualy takes second behind profit-- thats a very open ended debate!
The windshield on an xB is a very large, nearly vertical, fairly flat hunk of glass being pushed down the highway at high speeds while just three feet from the ground.
Most other vehicles do NOT have windshields this vertical, this large, and this flat, this close to the ground, and with a very short hood in front of them.
The chances of an xB windshield taking a 'fatal' hit from road debris is higher than any other common vehicle I'm familiar with.
made. even though corporations say "safty first" it usualy takes second behind profit.

It may not be Toyota's fault, but our windshields were not designed to take road debris like that either. Speed limits in Japan on a highway are no more than 80 kilo's. That's not very fast. i think i was around 50 mph or so. I am upset that my window is scratched from the wiper. So I know this glass is soft. There is an aftermarket that is huge for windshields. That might be a problem that had been addressed by the aftermarket in Japan. Too bad I can't get that kind of stuff here.
hmmmm....this is turning out to be a very interesting post. Well here is a new question, has anyone had to replace their windshield and discovered that the new one seems to be better than the original?
there is a crack on my windshield that i havent gotten fixed cause its a exact shape of a star! its sooooo cute! :sighs: i need to get it fixed before it spreads... i shall take a pic of it.!
For the record, the Chopshot solution has worked well for me three times thus far. Had a 3 inch crack in my wifes car, and round chip in my Durango before trading for xB and the round nick in the xB. $30 each with no further cracking or damage out of any of them. I'll be going back next time the xB get a chip.
My windshield experience:
I've had the box for two months. While driving down the freeway, a rock was kicked up and struck the windshield with a bang that was loud enough to startle me and my passengers. It caused a star in the window with three 1.5 inch cracks radiating from the star. I had a window guy look at it- he said it needed to be replaced. I scheduled an appointment to get it done. The windshield guy was right- by the next day, one crack had grown to run up more than 3/4 the length of the windshield.
My insurance has a $500 deductable. The insurance company will repair a windshield for free, but a replacement is subject to the deductable. The aftermarket windshield (PPG) cost me $325 installed.
Have I ever had to replace a windshield on any other car that I have owned? No, and I remember having some substantial impacts from rocks in the past. Do I think Toyota uses cheap, defective glass? I think probably not. Do I think XB windshields are more susceptible to breakage than other models? Probably, due to the factors mentioned before in this thread: size, proximity to the road, etc.

I've been affraid of this happening to mine. In Florida, if you have full coverage, windsheild replacement is free and doesn't count against you. Friend of mine has the new FJ, his windsheild is completely vertical, so I don't feel as bad now, lol.
I had a small almost unnoticeable chip in my windshield. I don't know when I got it. I'm the only one who drives the car, so either I didn't notice it when it happened, or something fell out of a tree I was parked under. The chip got bigger when it got hit dead-on by a one-inch piece of hail as I was driving for cover from a sudden hail storm. It's not obstructing my view, but it is right above my line of sight, and is annoying when the sun glints through it.
