Default Front license plate relocation

I have noticed quite a few pictures on this site where the front license plate has been moved from between the upper and lower grilles and relocated to the middle of the lower grille. I have a few questions about this......First, is it legal? Second, is there a kit or are you guys just using zip ties? I hate having to use a front license plate, but here in California you've got a good chance of getting nailed for not having one. If I have to use one I think the plate looks much better in the middle of the bottom grille.

I am pretty sure it is legal. Here is a link to the DIY it is for the first gen xb but should work 2.

i wanted to do that too but the dealership drilled into my bumper before i told them not to. you would have to zip tie it since the bottom grille height is a little smaller than the size of a plate

I had the dealer not drill holes in my tC's bumper and ended up using the method linked to above to clear a fix it ticket. I don't think it would work on the 2nd gen unless you got some huge washers. The spacing in the bottom grill is pretty big.

Here in Oregon it is not legal but so far no one even notices. I bent a little bit of the bottom (still see tags) and over an inch on top to make it fit. I simply used zip ties after drilling small holes in the bent over portions of the plate. But I too got the request in before the holes were drilled.

I had my body shop fill in the holes, and then paint the middle section high gloss black. Also, I bought a tag bracket from Marshall, eight08customs, in Hawaii, and mounted it to the bottom grille.

In regards to the question about it being legal, YES, it is legal. If the state you live in requires a tag displayed on the front of your vehicle, then you can have located wherever visible. Just as long as you have a front tag.

OMS, which bracket did you order from Marshall, the xB one? They don't have one presetly for the 2nd gen.
