hid kits have become very cheap at least......
I had my HID kit for a little over 2 1/2 years. I never had a ballast issue but I replaced the harness relay 2 times(exposure to the elements) and replaced the bulbs once because of a flicker.
I paid 170 for my kit when it was new and that was with the old analog ballasts. The New Digital Balasts are much cheaper(and I wonder if the quality is less along with that price?)

because he got caught in a legal crossfire and didn't want to deal with it anymore... that's what i can only assume and from small snippets of what i heard.
also, back then, even MobileHID stopped carrying the slim ballasts for the very reason mentioned above.. he tested them and found them to be unreliable.
