Default Would you recommend an aftermarket moonroof?

I'm trying to decide on whether or not I want to save up for one. I think they look sick on the gen2xb and I've seen some photos of other members who've gotten them done. A lot of folks say theirs came installed at the dealer, but the dealer I bought my xb2 from doesn't do aftermarket moonroofs and my salesman says he used to work at a dealership that did do them and 50% of them leaked water.

SO, my main point is, what are your two-cents? I know webasto is one of the better (or is the only) companies that does aftermarket roofs. Anyone who has one installed like to share their experience?

Thanks-

I would never get it done, I'd be way to scared of it leaking. But, my friend's mom had one done on her Previa like 15 years ago and it never leaked.

So I think it really depends on who installs it and what company makes it. Just do your research first I guess.

Of course, I'm a bit paranoid and I won't even install a spoiler as I'm afraid that would leak.

Experiences seem to vary about this. I put a Webasto 700 in my 1st gen XB and had nothing but trouble. It leaked, it would lose the programming often, it hit the roof when retracted, etc. One point that also needs to be made is there is a lot of almost flat sheet metal on the top of an XB. Heat makes metal expand. My sunroof worked ok when temps were low or it was parked in the shade but once things heated up it would jam because the roof expanded effectively shrinking the hole. I'll never put an aftermarket moonroof in anything again.

For what it's worth, I put a Webasto Panoramaic Sunroof in my 05 xB 1st gen, and so far there have been no leaks or problems. I had it put in by a very reputable installer so perhaps this is a factor. I live in FL, with high heat, and have seen no differences at any time of the year. I've had it back to the installer once for routine servicing (cleaning and lubricting the mechanism), but that's all so far. The installer gave me a lifetime no leak guartantee by the way.

I work for a car company and I get this call a lot. People put aftermarket sunroofs in their cars and they leak. Happens a lot. Put it this way, if you get one, and it does leak, kiss your warranty goodbye. If it doesn't leak, then awesome!

I have an Inalfa brand Model asi925 witch is 19"x37" and I like it more than the factory one in the new RS xB2 personally. I have never seen any sign of it leaking, and I have been through a relative wet winter here. It has a 60K mile warranty. It was already installed before I got my box, and if I should ever need service I'll call the guys who installed it and they come to me!
Oh, and the dealer where I got my box wanted to make the sale so badly, they threw it in for less than half of what they had it marked up to on the sticker...$2K! I LOVE THE OPEN AIR FEELING!

thanks everyone for your insight. im going to check out a couple local dealerships to see if they install, if not then I got the #'s and addresses of a few local installers who deal with Hollandia/Webasto and I'll see what kind of deals they're running. I think I'm definitely going to go through with it just got to find a good installer with a good warrenty.

i wouldn't go throught with it, at least not with a daily driver. especially, if you have bad winters.

While, I am a daily driver, the winters here in Richmond are barely anything to write home about. It never snows, and if it does it melts before it touches the ground. Thats global warming for ya. The temps get mildly low but nothing to make you worry.

I am still thinking about it. I really want to do it but I'm still seeing what the local shops have to offer.
