2008 xB using oil but passed consumption test
My 75,000 mile '08 xB has been using a quart of oil every 1000 miles or so and with the 10th anniversary of it's "in service" date coming up at the end of the year, I figured it was time to do the consumption test. Much to my surprise it passed which now has me wondering how much oil consumption is acceptable? I was second guessing myself until 600 miles after the test, it's down 1/2 quart. My understanding is that I can have one more test done by the end of the year because of it's age but if it passes again I was wondering what, if any, course of action I can take with Toyota. As of now it appears that this car is headed for an early grave. I also own an '07 Ford Taurus w/ 110,00 miles, and a '02 Ford Focus w/ 93,000 miles that stay in the operating range between 5,000 mile oil changes without additional oil needing to be added.

08-11 xbs consume oil...its well known....your car will last forever as long as you check the oil and top it up a couple times a week...a car using oil doesn't mean an "early grave"....my 1991 GTI, which was my daily driver until a year ago, consumed easily 1/2 quart a week starting at 180,000 miles, and it always passed emission testing with flying colors, and the motor was still going strong at 278,000 miles when I sold it....
since when do people equate a motor using oil with the same motor not lasting???

Also, if it consumes too much oil, Toyota will basically take it in and have their dealership parts monkeys strip and rebuild your motor, which a LOT of people are finding is much worse than dealing with a little oil consumption...I know I would not want some dealership incompetent mechanic rebuilding my motor, which is what has to be done because its the piston rings that are causing the oil consumption issues with these cars....
so basically, enjoy your car, check and replace oil as needed and forget about it....if ya cant live with it, sell the car and move on....

I did consider that it would no longer be a "factory built" engine and would rather have it not consume oil than have major engine parts replaced with new at 75k. Since i'm otherwise pleased with the car I'll likely keep it until I tire of it, which will be long before it's burning 1/2 a quart of oil a week.

What does Garage is empty, Add now mean?
For those with an oil burning problem, I wonder if doing a re-ring would be a good DIY project??? Or do the pistons need to be replaced as well?? Rockauto shows this kit
2009 SCION XB 2.4L L4 Re-Ring Kit | RockAuto
Looks like you could remove the cylinder head and sump, unbolt the con-rods and pass the pistons up thru the bores. So no need to remove the engine from the car???
Has anyone done this???
