? about $823 Quote to fix A/C for 2012 Scion xB
Thank you all in advance for your assistance!
Hi, I drive a 2012 Scion xB and I live in the very hot state of Hawaii where A/C is very important. For the past 6 months, every time I get to a stoplight, the A/C turns from cold to warm, to hot. I went to a repair shop and was quoted $317.00 dollars for LABOR,
$482.00 for the COMPRESSOR and lastly $24 for the expansion valve which they say gets replaced similar to how a filter gets replaced. This totals to $823.00. Should I shop around for other quotes or should I consider this a "good" deal?
Thank you all for your time and effort and have a nice day!

The clutch on the compressor is probably toast. Most places replace the expansion valve (or orifice tube) as its required for warranty work later on. I work at an auto parts store and its common to require the orifice tube or expansion valve to also be purchased with a compressor for warranty purposes. Otherwise your hosed with no warranty if the compressor fails. I do however think the $317 for labor is a bit steep. Replacing a compressor should only take an hour in total, especially on our cars. They seem to be quoting you on 3 hours of labor.
The price of the Compressor and Expansion Valve sounds fairly priced.
The Toyota Dealerships in my area vary in their Labor Rate from $145-160 an hour.
Seems like they would be charging for amounts to be 2 hours Labor in my area.
Keep in mind Prices and Cost of Living are Higher in Hawaii and Cali then most other States.
I Suggest you can try getting Quotes from local or Independent shops in your Area.
