Debating wether doing this would actually help the annoyance that occurs with my xb2. It seems the tranny takes quite some time to warm up & prior to it doing so, my 2nd & 3rd gear have a very slight grind. Usually I can avoid it by letting the revs drop some and then switch gears, but this is rather annoying. This is the first manual tranny vehicle i've owned that has had this problem.

Has anyone has swaped out the fluid with other products such as gm snychromesh, pennzoil synchromesh or redlines mtf? Thanks!

 

IDK just make sure the clutch is all the way in and maybe rev a little higher before you let it out. Kinda seems like I had that issue when I first got my box and I either adapted to it or it went away... its my first manual car so IDK. Hopefully something works out for you. This box is tricky.

 

not sure of the noise you speak of, but i did change my trans oil to royal purple after about 1000 miles. runs a bit quieter and my mileage went up about .5mpg.

I notice that when mine is cold, when I am in 1st gear and I depress the clutch it kinda makes a clunking sound, and when I shift to 2nd I can hear a clank.

Now when its warm I dont notice this at all. Could changing out my fluid help?

Yeah I've noticed harder shifting for the first mile or so since the cold weather hit. It's fine after it warms up though. Mine doesn't make noise or grind though, just doesn't want to let it go into 2nd or 3rd until it warms up.

 

OK I finally changed the MTF fluid with Redline MT-90! I only have 5 miles on the stuff but 1st, 2nd, 3rd are MUCH smoother now. 4th and 5th still feel the same, they don't grind, but they don't just fall in to place so easy as the others. If you are having that notchiness in your tranny I highly recommend swapping the fluid.

Also I think the horrible whine on deceleration in 1st & 2nd is gone too but I'm going to have to double check.

Just needs time to warm up. I have a stick also, but in all other auto Scions, except the tC for some reason, while the engine is cold, it will not shift into overdrive, and it's a little whiney and stuff.

 

True it does need time to warm up, but after its warmed up 1st, 2nd, & 3rd shift better & easier then when it had the stock fluid. Before they would sometimes have a "clunk" feel when going into gear but now there is very little effort when going in gear.

 

Hey folks, greetings! This is my first post.

I have about 700 miles on my 08 xB manual and it seems that in the last 150 miles or so the tranny has started to make a "clunkety-clunk" when letting out the clutch in first and second and also when moving the shift lever. I have been getting really worried about this. So it sounds like a few of you have had a similar issue that has been resolved simply by replacing the gear oil? Sounds like something I might want to do. Is it much work?

 

Update: I'm actually thinking about switching from the Redline mt-90 fluid to AMSOIL fluid. Sometimes it feels really good, & other times it gets really notchy.

Wickedcold, its not that hard, but make sure you have the right tools (it'll save you alot of time).

 

how much did you pour in? im at about 12-13k and still on stock fluid...no noises that you speak off...but i know i should change the MTF soon...i do hear a clunking sometimes but it doesnt feel or sound like its from the trans...i always thought it was a mount of some sort... :p

 

I belive it took almost 3 quarts. The stock fluid is good for 50k miles(I think), but I didn't like it. The Redline mt-90 works when it wants to honestly. There are times when it goes in really smooth (no "drag" feel) & there are times when it feels like the stock fluid. *shrugs*

I'm hoping that amsoil will do the trick. All my previous standard transmissions I've driven were much easier to get into gear.

 

Try some shifter cable bushings first, see if that does anything.

 

i'm still running the royal purple and loving it. just like the engine, the trans needs to break in too. i have 23,500mi on my car now and the knotchyness (except for the TRD short throw) is gone. all the gears are smooth, no clunks or chunky sounds when shifting. i am, however, going to change out the fluid very soon due to the break-in. the fluid is very easy to change, which makes it really nice. 2 plugs and some jacks/ramps... not too much to it. i'm running their engine oil (every 5000mi change) and their radiator additive. as far as i'm concerned, its worth every penny... (IMO)

 

NO CLUNK ON MINE. dat's prolly coz I don't have to deal with cold weather. I am havin a hard time adjustin to d clutch.
