Hello, I have a Scion xB 2009 215,000 miles on it. I don't know when they did a transmission fluid drain and fill. Will it be okay to use the Valvoline ATF?

And if so, is it okay to mix old WS with Valvoline ATF?

I have the same question. I already did it though and i am smelling the fluid. I wonder if I spilled a little and that's what I'm smelling, or if I messed up. I did the filter too. It was pretty easy but I mixed the Valvoline ATF
(it says right on the container that its for Toyota) with what was left in the tranny. Now I'm a little nervous. After about 400 miles, the smell is going away and there is no change in performance.

 

There is some risk when changing fluid on an automatic transmission with 215k miles on it.

You run the risk that the clutches in the trans have worn to the point where the particles in the old fluid are what generates enough friction to allow the trans to function. By replacing the fluid, less suspended friction material, and the clutches don't have enough on them to move the car.

This is particularly a concern if the service history of the trans is unknown. If the fluid has been changed every 30k miles since day one, I'd be less worried about a fluid change at 200k miles. If you have little to no history of how often the fluid has been changed, I'd stop and think a bit. If the trans is operating properly now, by changing the fluid at high miles you are introducing the possibility that it will not after the change.
