DIY: LED swap Tutorial (No 56k!!)
yah i might try ur little tatoo thing. scrape all the orange of (using what) then since the black will kill alot of that excess light. but i might make it look really dull at night. then again for 93 cents i can get a dark blue folder (What materrial or pics) and put that over that clear protector thing where teh needles go, then just add my custiom gauge face. that might work better actually. (i edit jack poo so if u get mad that i just changed ideas mid post too damn bad). hmmm. im thinking the folder layout and save the stock gauge.
i left the needles alone actually. i swapped the lights that are normally red there for blue. the neeldes are now just kinda dull red and don't light up really at all... but i think of leaving it blue and just work on getting things to light better. using that folder method
i know this might be a dumb question but after looking thru all these pages i still dont know how many i need. i need to do the cluster assembley, low end radio, steering wheel control, hvac, shifter light and window switch. how many and what kind?
Buy the conversion kit from sean@ledmod.com. He will include enough for the conversion. The conversion of the stock radio was a bit beyond my soldering equipment. I had him do that, but did all of the other stuff myself. If you want to buy a blue-converted stock stereo let me know.
To be specific, if you want to do just the gauge cluster, you will use at least 17 PLCC-2 LED's (more if you convert all of the indicator LED's too). You will need two 1206's for the Mode button and for the Traction Control switch. The shifter console involves some creativity. You will need an LED strip for that. The HVAC controls either require Sean's HVAC kit, or you can go with the neowedge bulbs from autolumination.com .
Hey Low_Down,
Check with Sean on the radio too. Taking the face plate off is very easy. Remove the stereo. Look on each side of the face for a two small screws. Just remove those screws, then gently unclip the face from the stereo. Then you will need to remove the screws from the backside of the PCB to expose the component side. There you will see the LED's to be swapped. Removing them is super easy, but soldering on 0805 led's is harder than it looks. They are so small, that they were actually too small for me even with my reverse action tweezers and a 1mm soldering tip.
Look up Garage1217. He sells pink converted stereos. However, I must warn you, pink led's fade rather quickly. So you may be making more work for yourself in the near future.
That being said, if you do it, post pics. I've only seen pink LED swaps on TC's. I am thinking of doing it for my wife in her next car. My idea is to use white LED's with a pink velum overlay.

sorry, don't know if this was asked before... BUT:
what are the stock led colors behind the gauge face for all the tach numbers, E-F, and C-H, gauges? are they orange like the faceplate or are they something else?

so if i change the faceplates to have the white a white rpm band on the photo paper as opposed to the stock orange, they will still light orange?
