I just came up with an idea after I spent some time looking at the trunk. If you flip the spare tire over, so the black inside of the rim is facing up, you now have a huge whole, with about a 13-14" diameter. There is about 8 inches of depth now. I think we may be able to get this to work in a custom enclosure. ED, you need to try this and maybe you could squeeze a sq10 single or maybe even the thirteen. Please look at this and let me know. Basically we would just need a new screw post to hold the spare down, and the box should drop down and fit in the space. Remember this was my idea, so you know, a free enclosure would sure be appreciated. Thanks and let me know.
Many have done what you're suggesting. JL Audio has made many enclosures for many cars doing exactly that. The Nov 07 issue of Car Audio & Electronics has a DIY article on how to create a sub enclosure into a spare tire. The area under the xB floor is huge (compared to other cars) and doing a rack would be simple, as demonstrated above. One thing that JL does is fire the sub down so that it's protected. If it's not for show, this is a good way to get the bass without the vulnerability.

Considering the shape of the top, yeah, that's about right. And since the top is double stacked to recess the drivers, there goes about 2/3's the sheet right off the bat.

beef,

Have you considered offering C-pillar subs for those of us who want to keep the spare and can live with the level of bass afforded by a pair of 6.5-8" sub drivers? IIRC I saw you comment somewhere else about the potential risk of installing subs at occupant head level but if you used HD toggle bolts to mount a baffle board to the c-pillar panel it seems to me that would take a lot of inertial load to break the drivers/baffle board/interior panel free. Obviously weight is a safety concern so I'm thinking composite baskets, strontium magnets and some kind of dense plastic for the baffle board for light weight and lower impact inertia.

I'm no expert on this stuff but I would love to see those empty C-pillar openings used for something useful and stealth subs are my first choice. Even if I had to sign some sort of personal liability waiver to buy the things, I'd still jump on them.

To reply to ScionFred, it's rather difficult to get a shallow 8" driver to reproduce lows very well. I've seen guys running 8's all the time on www.realmofexcursion.com/forum, but they're all ported in large boxes.

I'm not sure if a subwoofer in the c's would be very viable.

You're probably right but I may have to try anyway. I'd be satisfied if they added as much bass as a small underseat amp/sub. I'm considering making them aperiodic by cutting out the back of the panel but I have no idea how well this is going to work. It sure would look good though.

Check this out: http://www.elitecaraudio.com/article.php?sid=18

This may just work after all. I can fit a standard 8" sub-driver that is ~3.5" deep, cut a hole in the back of the C-pillar panel and install an aperiodic membrane between the C-pillar and the sheetmetal. It's worth a try.

I have to disagree. I have a pair of Boston Pro8.4 subs in a 0.5 cf sealed box, that in the car (cabin gain effect), plays very low, ~30 Hz@-3db. This sub was developed before the hyper-xmax designs. I don't know how shallow you want, but my boxes are only 8" deep (extension of woofer to bottom.)

There are multiple 8" subs that should perform similarly and in smaller sealed boxes.

One caveat is output level. There are limitations and an 8" sub isn't a 12". And there are many factors that determine the performance of a sub, and there are always compromises.

Personally, I'm willing to give up some volume for the depth and fast response of these smaller subs.

How is the sound quality on ED systems? I like my bass to be able to slam when im in the mood for it but I'd definatly prefer detailed hits to a just a loud muddy dumpy thud.

I'm Running Infinity Kappa 6.5 components (the '05 models that sounded amazing, not that excessivly bright 06/07s) in the front and back and I have been searching for a subwoofer answer similar to what they are offering here that would compliment the detail i get out of my Kappa. Obviously I would be looking mainly at the 2x10", however shallow throw speakers make me nervous

How does the 13" sound while I'm asking?
