Default PT546-00121 (T1818) USB issue

Has anyone else experienced USB issues with the messages "Transferring data from the iPod. Pleas wait..." then "Connection error. Please consult your Owner's Manual for instructions on how to connect the iPod" with the 2012 Premium Radio.
I just bought a new-old "take out" radio and I have been getting the error message. The radio starts to play music over USB with my iPhone 6+ showing artwork on the display. After a song or two the artwork disappears, the sound starts sounding scratchy then goes to feedback/distortion.
The radio also switches to Pandora when plugged into the USB port if the app is installed without my doing anything. If I delete the app, a pop-up appears asking me to install it and sends me to the app store.
If I just use bluetooth, music plays fine, but it sounds better over USB and my phone stays charged. The radio & CD work fine. My 2014 Display Audio and Entune module had no issues in the car. I just sold them because I am not going to pay $250+ to buy & install a map update. I put the base 2012 radio back in the car and it has no issues.
If anyone has had the problem and fixed it or has suggestions, please let me know. The phone is on the latest stable release of iOS and has no problem connecting to my PC, laptop, or other devices over USB.
